I installed the free JJOS and found it to be exactly what everyone said it was: a polished version of the Akai OS.

I then decided to update to JJOS1 because I did not find the Free JJOS's trim function to be as intuitive as the Akai OS (maybe I am dumb) and definitely not as featured as JJOS1.

However, I did not hold down ERASE the first time I loaded up JJOS1, as that direction is stored in the manual, not the installation instructions. So I had some inconsistent behavior with recording and metronome, etc.

Now if I boot up the system while holding down ERASE, I get consistent results. However, is this how it is intended? Should I hold down ERASE everytime I boot up or is the direction stating just when you first install the new OS? It seems like all of you have it figured out and I am some how missing on this fundamental understanding.

If it is in fact to be held down each time, I wonder why I didn't have any issues like this on the Free JJOS.

Your thoughts and help is appreciated. Yes, I searched the forums--if I missed something, see above about maybe being 'stupid'. :)

You only need to hold [ERASE] on boot when switching OS's. For example FREE JJOS -> OS1, OS1 -> OS2, OS2 -> OS2XL etc. Not on every boot or OS upgrade.

The only reason you perform the system reset is to clear away any residual memory artifacts of the previous install that could corrupt the function of the new install. You have to make sure you hold ERASE long enough to reset the screen contrast to default, but once it's done, it's done.

You haven't been too specific about what kind of problems you are encountering but assuming you are having a real problem that is not caused by user error or somesuch it's not impossible that your install file was corrupted. If that is the case try re-downloading, installing and reseting the machine again.

The specifics, for archival purposes--and to defend the idea it isn't a "user error" is: the metronome would not trigger despite it's setting being on; as well as the sequencer itself only recorded the first event or sometimes no events at all.

I have since reinstalled JJOS1, holding ERASE after the first reboot. So far, after many power cycles, none of these strange behaviors have manifested again.

Since I have searched this forum, and others like it for this clarification to no avail, I hope to have this thread as a reference to anyone else who may find themselves in a similar situation. In summation, the original holding of ERASE during first power cycle is crucial to alleviate any other gremlins that may come up in subsequent power cycles.
