Hello,

I was wondering which tubes i should use to get the best out of my equipment.

I have a Rode ntk that runs tru a art pro channel II preamp.

Me was told that when i change the tubes it can make a huge different in warmth and sound quality, maybe here some people with some good tips for me..

thnx !

I'd leave that poor man's option of changing the tubes on that art (not saying that it's a bad idea, just that you can do better with other alternatives). There's better options to have rather than replacing the tubes if you're looking to get better gain staging results for your mic.

Changing just the tubes and not the gain staging portion won't yield greater results in this situation imo.

Thnx for the reply's.

I understand what u mean, already tried to play with all the other options and i get a full nice vocalsound, no problem with that im happy with it, but when I can get even better vocals why not?

what's why I asked about the tubes, but if there's no big change then it's not worth it..

thnx again

generally, it is worth it. often gear, esp. non high end gear comes with very sucky tubes. you would need to know what kind of tubes they use. Id guess 12ax but that is what google is for. dont buy chinese/russian/weird eastern bloc versions. Spend a bit more and get an NOS US or german tube.

I realised that my response was based on a starved plate design. The pro channel isn't based on the same schematics as the cheaper mp. Yes, you should hear a difference in sound characteristics if you go through trying different tubes.

my whole theory on tube gear is when they put they tubes out front drawing attention to themselves, they are usually for the Hollywood effect or at best doing some blend of the signal with a cheap preamp tube. I stay away from that type of gear. there are a few examples that are cool but mostly suspect.
