SSD problem

so, i followed atestarr's lead and installed a crucial 64gb ssd in my mpc (used same ide adapter and bay converter). formatted the drive in the mpc and the mpc recognizes, reads from and writes to the drive. the thing is whisper quiet now, but...

i have to use "update" to search scsi components to find both the ssd and cd drive at almost every start-up. once it finds the drives (which takes about 5 seconds) everything is kosher. every blue moon the drives will show up on their own but 95% of the time i have to search for them.

fwiw, the ssd is in the same place scsi-wise as the old platter hd. could this have anything to do with scsi termination? i don't know diddly-dick about that stuff...

any ideas?

p.s. - other than that the installation was smooth, the machine is extremely quiet and appears a wink faster. kudos to atestarr for sharing his info.

your ssd drive is not a scsi drive, and termination has nothing to do with your problem.

good to know. i was only going on the fact that machine says "searching scsi devices" or whatever while it's looking for the drives.

What ssd drive did you install and what ide adapter did you install, and are you having the same exact problems still, or was the problem fixed?

no, problem still persists. let the machine sit and eventually it detects the drive...or just hit "update" and 5 seconds later ssd shows up.

i might try a different adapter since they're real cheap but atestarr does not appear to be having this issue and he's using identical hardware.

Probably a master/slave conflict on the ide buss.

does the adapter or drive have jumpers, to adjust this setting?

cd drive needs to be master or slave, and HD needs to be set accordingly.

i think i recall seeing a jumper on the adapter (definitely no jumper on ssd)...i'll take a look tonight. thanks for the tip.

removing jumper on ide/pata adapter results in ssd/cd drive not being found at all. however, removing cd drive from chain (-->cd-->ssd) results in ssd being found immediately.

looks like i'll be yanking the useless cd drive out.

i wondered if that would work...but not enough to actually try it. no real point in that i have never used the cd drive nor will i ever.

The CD player in the 4K is the only useable one I've got in my setup since I sold my CDJs.

My MBP is butted up against a wall so the drive is a pain to get to with that.

Hmmm, I seem to be getting the exact same behaviour as Jim.
I also got an "invalid volume handle" error at one point.

Clearly the firmware on the PATA > SATA adaptor isn't quite as transparent as it would like to be (I guess they mostly test it with Windows, not with exotic things like the MPC4000 OS 1.71)

I don't want to take my Plextor CD drive out though,
so I guess I'll have to just manually do the "UPDATE" thing to find drives...
to be honest I hardly ever use my MPC4000 any more, it's no big deal: when I *am* using it, load and save will be faster with the SSD, so I can bear the extra few button presses and seconds to manually seek for the drives.

(I do wonder if a better jumper arrangement might help? but the Plextor is jumpered as slave and the PATA to SATA adaptor has its jumper on which seems to make it happiest - it's not documented what the jumper does!)
