Multi MIDI recording with 2 MIDI sources simultaneously

scoured the boards but no luck:

I have a pretty typical MPC2000XL setup with 2 Roland MIDI sources, an XP-60 (on the MIDI in A) and a XV-3080 (on MIDI in B).

everything records find individually on MIDI channels 1-16 on both A and B. So I have 32 effective MIDI channels. Nice.

however, say I have a sound on MIDI channel 1 (A) on the XP-60, and another sound on MIDI channel 1 (B) of XV-3080 and want to layer these two patches together. I can in fact hear them together if I have the MPC setup like this:

S:MIDI: 1A-Device01 (Soft Thru: OMNI AB)

But when I record and then playback, I only hear the sound on MIDI Channel 1 (A), as if it never recorded MIDI Channel 1 (B) at all.

I would like to record both MIDI channels at the same time.

try copying the first track to another, then just change the channel of the track you copied ....

that does work, but not very practical or spontaneous. there should be a way to record both MIDI channels simultaneously.

so when you say not very practical or spontaneous, can you explain further...

Try changing:

S:MIDI:

to:

M:MIDI

Read up on the multi-track midi recording in the manual for the rest of the settings since I think it may allow a single source to two destinations without having to use the useless OMNI mode setting.

I did that -- the manual has only a paragraph -- if less. I also bought an ebook on the MPC2000XL but it had nothing -- why is the easy stuff so well documented, but the hard stuff not?

I have the MPC 60, and where you set the midi channel it has an '&' symbol where you can set another and both will sound. I'm not sure if the 2000 has that, but I did it last night and it is so easy.

The 60 and the 2000 are quite different I believe. But thanks.

From Page 54 of the MPC 2000XL manual:

In (MIDI channel input)
Select the MIDI input channel with the CURSOR UP/DOWN keys.

This is the first problem. In all other pages, I think, you would use the jog wheel to change values, not the cursor keys. This is a UI issue. I could *not* get the MIDI *input* channel to change with the jog wheel, so I figured you could not change it because the *output* MIDI channel *could* be changed with the jog wheel.

Track
Select the track to be recorded to. If two or more of the MIDI inputs are set to the same track, MIDI data will be merged onto that track and recorded. Set the Track field to OFF if you do not want to record.

Out (MIDI channel output)
Select the track with the CURSOR UP/DOWN keys and enter the MIDI output channel with the DATA wheel. If two or more of the MIDI inputs are set to the same track, they will be merged and sent out.

And that is key to it I believe. Say you select, for Track 01, MIDI input 16-A, and for Track 02, MIDI input 16-B, you should be able to record the two simultaneous MIDI sources simultaneously. Note also it appears you can set them to the same track and they will be 'merged' this might be OK to do if you really like the combined sound and don't want to remix the volumes or settings later.

I will give this a try later and report back.

Yeah, they are very different, a lot of 60 stuff was ported to the 2k's, but the interface on the 60 is much more elegant.

Also, check that the "Receive Channel" is set to 'ALL' (highlight :MIDI and press Open Window, I think). I do not recall if this affected the multi-track recording or not, but is a possibility.

Receive Channel ALL is for the (S) single MIDI mode, whereas you are supposed to select which channels in (M) multi mode.

Two things:

1. You cannot select with either the jog wheel or cursor different MIDI inputs, they are fixed and assigned 1-16A and 1-16B from top to bottom. All you can do is move up and down the tracks; I'm assuming
1-01 is MIDI 1A and
2-01 is MIDI 1B

Also worth note is the manual is a misprint -- the screen shot does not match the actual screen. My MIDI input window looks like this:

1-01
1-02
...
2-01
2-02

whereas the manual looks like this:

01A
02A
...

so that's a bit strange! I reloaded the lastest version of the operating system and it still looks like that.

So I try, and try and experiment, and still CANNOT get it to multi record multiple MIDI sources on either the same or different tracks. I know my MIDI equipment is working fine, because individually, I can record any MIDI channel from either device separately and it works wonderfully.

MIDI/MPC experts, please chime in!

I know what you mean - it's like this is a bug in the OS that was never resolved.

I get the exact same results - so I have been copying the track. But this is only kool if the two sounds are playing the same part.

I would like to be able to record both keyboards simultaneously, even tho the keyboard parts are different.
