why does everyone say a mixer is a vital purchase with an mp

Looking at Jaisu's video below he has a cheap yamaha mixer. What is he using it for? Howe does he have it wired up? The mpc has all the eq and fliter functionality that a mixer has, so why does everyone on this forum praise the importance of mixers? I looked into getting one, but most dont have eq kill switches, just +-15db boost of 3 bands. If you wanted to really sculpt the soulndm surely you need more than just a basic 3 band eq???

Didn't watch the vid. He probably use the mixer for mixing. He probably have the outputs of the MPC wired to the Inputs of the mixer. At least that how I would connect it

No. At least if you talk about the 2000 (xl) othersmight have slightly more. A mixer has EQ for every channel.

3-band EQ is pretty normal on mixers even the fixed frequency band on the cheap mixers. More advanced and expensive mixers have flexible full parametric 3 or 4 band EQs per channel but you still won't get something like "kill-switches"
If yyou wanna sculpt samples you should do this inside the computer that has way much more power doin stuff like this.

Yep, ur right. So you'd get a bigger better mixer or software in your computer daw, channel strip, some type of dynamics processor.
You can get a better mixer, you don't have to stick with 3 bands is my point.
Maybe he doesn't care as much as you care about his mixer.

Like a lot of us, he's just using a fairly basic mixer to get sounds from his turntable into the MPC. Notice he hasn't even got his computer turned on?

I'm sure when he's done he tracks it back through the mixer into the computer where he mixes it properly in software.

i use this technique where I save the beat to a floppy disk... then I turn off the mpc and put the floppy disk in the case... it's the "too lazy to track into the computer" technique.

Alright thanks for the response guys. Since you said that software is way more powerful for eq-ing than a 3band mixer.. I guess my next question is, once i have all my samples chopped up on the mpc, if i were to copy onto my PC to do some fx adding, eqing, filtering etc, what is a good program to do that in? Given that I don't need any other functionality to the program, i feel like Ableton or Reason etc would be overkill...

if you use a mixer to colour the sound before you sample, you dont have to do this back and forth between computer / mpc.

'more powerful' does not equal 'better'.

this is pretty subjective, something to keep in mind when working for sure. but if you dont think ahead you might paint yourself into a corner...

i am not saying it is better or not.
just explaining a method - if yer samples come in how you want, you don't have to go back and forth.

its up to op to go this route or not.

i keep all my stuff, my computer,my external sound card,my mpcs,moog, everything running through a lil gemini DJ mixer. why?? well what i do is use the 3 band eq on the dj mixer to get my sound just right, then i go into the software, or hardware im using and use the eqs in there till i get my dj mixers eqs all at 0. its easier for me to grab 3 knobs and get my mix right, then i can see what needs to be adjusted in the hardware/software eq or filter section..by the way, my dj mixer only outputs to my monitors, so the eq/dj mixer settings are not being recorded into my DAW, it only serves as a reference for me to get my mix right, or a eq for live jamming..hope u understand

yeah i removed the mackie 120vlz i've been using since 2005. it's unnecessary. i was just using it to route and as phantom power for mic.

everything just goes into the delta66s now. destructive EQ is not for me.
