Hi, this is the first time i write here, I am Simone, from Italy, I have a big problem with my MPC 2000 xl that I can't fix at all.

Few days ago i was saving a beat on my external HD, and the mpc crashed starting showing on my screen a lot of numbers and starting to make bad noises, so I turned it off thinking I've only lost the beat.

From that moment the only words i could see on my MPC were : "please inset MPC 2000 xl Disk".

I had a ZIP reader, but it was broken, so i get a new floppy reader and a floppy disc with the updated OS inside, i mounted them and now when i tourn my mpc ON this is what i see:

So can anyone help me please?
i actually don't really know what could i do.

many many many many thanks,

Simone.
PS-Sorry for my bad english!

Even though the answer was a little bit of a joke with the Google animation, those are the links to old threads here that you should read. (press the 'more results from MPC forums" under the first Google listing).

When you have an issue like this it's best to read all the previous threads/posts on the same or similar issues and hopefully you find a solution or at least you will be able to describe your problem and what led to it better. The more info and the better the description of the problem the better the chance people can help you.

I got that screen once. It popped up while i was making a beat and then no button was working except the LRUP cursors. I just turned the power off and when i turned it back on everything was fine. Maybe open your case and make sure everything is connected properly.

i read old posts, al telling about insert mpc disk, but my problem is another one, the google link take me to old posts talking about the wrong problem, and I really read all them.

I can't get out of this problem....

Yes I know what you mean. When you have a problem that major all you can do is hope that one of the threads or another poster had the exact same thing happen. But there also may be more than one way an MPC ends up in that state.

What OS is in your MPC 1.14 or 1.20? That might be a clue to your problem. And is the floppy external or did you put an internal one in the MPC.?

Sometimes these things are a problem with the MPC expecting SCSI but the disk drive is ATAPI or vice versa. I'm no expert and never had this happen but the threads I've seen here it's often the OS/SCSI/ATAPI issues I mentioned.

There's a couple guys who post here late night (N. America time) who know the XL way better than I do. Maybe they can offer more info than I can.

Does it go to that memory dump screen as soon as you turn it on?

Does it load the MPC2KXL.BIN OS file from the floppy disk?

Are you sure that the MPC2KXL.BIN file is in the root directory/folder of the floppy disk?

Have you disconnected everything except the floppy drive?

Can you use the MPC menus at all, to get to the LOAD window, to try to load the MPC2KXL.BIN file into the MPC and save it to OS flash memory?

Thanks to everyone!!

When I turn on my MPC this is what I see, I tried to disconnect everything, RAM ecnlosed, the files on the floppy disc are correctly placed, and the floppy reader is internal, ATAPI connected.

I cannot use anything on my mpc, that is the only one screenshot i can see, all the lights on the mpc are on, and I can press any key but nothing happens.

ahhaha damn

You connect the floppy disk drive to the P50(FDD) connector, not to the P82 INTERNAL ATAPI/IDE connector.

The floppy disk drive uses a 34 pin cable, not the 40 pin ATAPI/IDE cable.

And pin 1 of the floppy connector is towards the front of the MPC, not like pin 1 of the ATAPI/IDE connector which is towards the rear of the MPC (even though the connectors are right next to each other).

So you are telling me I'm wrong with the cables?

I read your answer but still do not understand.

What am I mistaking?

I put the grey (data I gues) cable to the ATAPI IDE, and the power floppy cable to the only one place it can be put on..

I hope you understand me,
thank you VERY MUCH,

simo

You seem to be telling us that you are connecting the floppy drive to the MPC ATAPI/IDE connector, if that is what you are doing, then it is wrong.

I put the grey (data I gues) cable to the ATAPI IDE, and the power floppy cable to the only one place it can be put on..

What are you connecting to the MPC ATAPI/IDE connector, what is on the other end of the grey data cable, the floppy drive?

If so, then it is wrong, the grey data cable from the floppy drive should be connected to the MPC (FDD) connector, not to the ATAPI/IDE connector.

The MPC (FDD) connector is right next to the MPC ATAPI/IDE connector, they are 2 different connectors, you can only connect the floppy drive to the MPC (FDD) connector.

THE MPC (FDD) connector (and cable) is smaller, it has 34 pins, it is for connecting a floppy drive to the MPC.

The MPC ATAPI/IDE connector (and cable) is larger, is has 40 pins, it is for connecting a ATAPI or IDE Zip drive, or card reader/writer, to the MPC.

You also have to make sure that pin 1 on the MPC connector is connected, through the ribbon cable, to pin 1 on the device (floppy/Zip/card reader/etc.) that you are connecting to the MPC.

If pin 1 on the MPC is not connected to pin 1 on the device, then it will not work.

I don't know exactly what you are trying to do.

If I was you, I would disconnect any hard drive or card reader that you have, and just try to get it working with only a floppy drive connected, and see if you can reload the OS to start with.

Well you did it right..

but what's the floppy drive you are using with the MPC.
Maybe it's just a bad pinout or not fully compatible.

Se ti serve una mano mandami un pm.

Peace.
