i was wanting to sample into the Sp 303 and trigger the 303 on a velocity keyboard (such as the MPK 25)

but i dont understand if this keyboard will work or not, since it has only 25 keys and the Sp 303 has a possible 32 sounds (4 banks x 8 sounds per bank)...seems like i would miss out on the last 7 pads on bank D of the Sp 303...

is there a way around this, or would i have to get a bigger keyboard controller?

thanks

you can switch octaves up or down on pretty much all 25 key controllers, you should be fine man.

so just changing the octave gives access to the other pads, huh? learnt something new there.. thank you

has anybody used the MicroKorg both as its own synth and a Midi controller?

wonder how difficult (or not at all) it would be to use the mK as a synth, then switch its knob to "midi" and control something like the Sp 303?

it shouldnt be to hard at all, except if you wanted to record/program both of these like this it wouldnt work too well. if you were just using it to jam out then you should be fine, but you will only be able to trigger one unit at a time.

you should look up if your microkorg has a "local control" on and off feature. im sure it does, but you should check just to be sure. the local control feature (or on mpc's its called pad to sampler) is what turns off the keys from triggering the sounds inside the microkorg, thus just sending the midid data (if you have it hooked up via midi) to another soundsource (your 303)

if you leave local control on while doing this you would just have whatever corresponding note playing over top of what you were triggering via midi, thats why they give you the option of turning it on or off cause that can get rather annoying and its not realistic to make music like that.

hope that helps.

I run a microkorg with mpc1000 and do not wholly agree with what damien907 says really.
I run JJOSXL but that should not matter too much really. I use the microkorg as a simple controller every day and its good, but you have to enable the microkorgs to send the MIDI CCs and PCs otherwise it wont. See manual in the midi section for that.

If you do not use a midi loop you can have local on. Only when you get up to recording Arps do you worry bout that or like i said you have a midi loop.

Basically the MPC will listen and echo the data to the active track selected. And at same time the microkorg can be playing anything you send it if you have a track sending stuff out to the microkorg. Then use another midi in/out to sp303. This way you can play live and record what you play on both sp303 and microkorg. Also the microkorg will also send CCs out to MPC and then out to your SP303. If they are mapped the same, I have not had a SP303 for years so can not remember if the MIDI CC numbers are the same like they have to be for this to work./ BUT you are lucky as the microkorgs MIDI CC settings are re-mappable. Though this is not recommended for a beginner.
So do not worry about local on/off settings, you only worry about that if you have notes going through in a loop and it does not happen usually in this case.
