Samplng Directly from Vestax Handy Trax

Is it a good or bad idea to sample directly from the Vestax portable Handytrax
into the mpc without a mixer?

Not into a mpc1000, because there's no phono stage. You don't need a mixer, but you could get a battery operated phono stage for like 15 bucks. Hell I have one I could give you

Well I was reading about the handytrax and I have some questions that would involve me reading the manual. Namely, the handytrax has a speaker out which may indicate the tt has some sort of internal phonostage that its taking the signal from the CC cartridge and boosting it to line level so the speakers can play it. I don't have the manual or the tt in front of me to confirm if that's the case. It could be that the speaker is tiny and its just amplifying the signal a little bit so you can at least hear it, I don't know.

Another question though is whether or not the audio output from the handytrax (the cable output that is) is routed through this suspected internal preamp or not. I would imagine it is, if the handytrax's purpose is to just leisure listen or jack into someone's stereo for a quick vinyl session. I am not sure either.

What I will say is that plugging it into a mixer and having the mixer go to your MP will not cause any real issues with quality. Anytime you use analog gear, and add pieces to the chain, you are inviting the OPPORTUNITY for degradation of signal or inclusion of outside noise. It may not even be noticable, and if it is--remember this is what give's analog its character. It's vinyl after all, which from the cracks and pops and hums of the tt motor and fluctuation of signals from the wall and the like all add to the experience. People spend 10's of thousands of dollars on purifying analog connections with specialized phonostages, interconnects, preamps, poweramps, conditioners, cartridges, slipmaps, mounting isolators, headshells.. .you get the idea... to avoid that slight opporunity for degradation and noise.

So if you are really concerned about losing quality, realize its a huge battle that some people have really nice techniques to avoid for a decent price and some have a general idea and a ton of money and will never be satisified until they can augment their eardrums to be more precise. lol

My take is, if you are using a tt lke a handytrax, running it into a mixer with the TRIM turned all the way down on the channel (assuming that the suspected internal phono stage exists) will be your best bet. Otherwise you will be over-amplifying the signal and may clip and have a more obvious loss-of-quality.
