Live with the 2000xl & Known producers that use the MPC

underworld have six mpc2kxls on stage- (i think 3 or 4 are for back up) and they load up tunes on one set whilst playing other tunes on the other set...and they are tight tight tight live....

so it aint just hip-hop/rnb...

Here in philly they have contest with guys battling on specific pieces...one of the battles were for guys using the MPC

I have used MPC 2000 and 2000XL and SP1200 in at least 5 different countries on stage and the MPCs are the most solid

I need to work out how to use the mpc live fast. I'm battling this kid in a few weeks at a local club, and i want to keep it as live as i can. I'm thinking of doing everything live, so no pre-recorded sequences or loops at all, just doing everything right there.
Some tips would be nice.

for the last year on tour ive used an MPC2000XL for sample and percussion triggering.

other gear we took on tour:

CDJ1000 (x2)
SL1200
Novation K-Station
SM58
Roland XP30
-a variety of mixers

added a laptop to it recently for Ableton Live sequences

my mpc technique got pretty slick, with simultaneous note repeat triggers and filtering and adjusting repeat time on the fly. nothing NEAR the fly ass skills of dj shadow however. everytime ive seen him has been a beautiful display of serious skill


you will find MPC's in most electronic touring acts if they actually play live at all. a good percentage "mime" their sequences from laptops or DATs which ive discovered first hand over the years. pretty shocking when you play gigs with your respected peers and they are as live as a bucket of concrete

Can't forget those Linkin' Park clowns... The blokey in the background seems to have a good ol' bash on his MPC2000.

dj crook of team sleep and decible devils uses an sp1200 live.

check the link of live MPC battles. DJ feeds them a sample and they have 20 min to make a beat to see who will move the crowd the most.

Also, someone said before that Rob the Viking, Swollen Members DJ and producer uses a MPC live. As I live in Vancouver, and knowing Prevail for a long time, since him and Moka were doing shit in victoria, I still chill with the group. And Rob only uses his tables live, but when he makes beats he uses a 2000xl.

the best i have seen live (on youtube) was the hip hop group from japan called hifana. just ridiculous. i showed damon elliot and he went beserk. please go look them up. guaranteed MPC inspiration for those jaded cats out there.

I got youtubes of me playing live at beat battles. There was a lot of controversy playing live at battles. but i figured that if you have the ability to do so. then do it.

simple chop triggering and simple drum patterns, nothing to spectacular like Jel of Anticon or Hifana.

If you, for a second, consider the MPC to be an "instrument" than you have a very flawed perspective of what an actual music instrument is. Would you, if ever asked, tell someone that you "play the MPC 2000" -- I sure hope not.

I'm in a band. When people ask me what insturment i play, i say the drum machine. the ordinary person wouldn't know what an mpc is.
look at dj hanh from linkin park. He has some how incorperated the mpc with rock music. So why wouldn't it be concidered to be an insturment?

Last night i just had a show where we used two mpcs to play live beats. No DJ at all. so we busted are asses playing beats live over an open mic.
