Post your views and questions about the Akai MPC2500

HI All,

I'm a long time mpc-2kxl user. My MPC-2kxl has developed a timing reliability problem.. to fix it probably requires a new mainboard so I've decided to bite the bullet and upgrade ..

I'm leaning towards the mpc 2500 with xlcd ...

The question is;
Does it travel well.... i.e. in a square case is there any risk to the extended screen or can it travel flipped up.. as it won't fit in a case flipped down?

I don't gig much anymore but I wouldn't want to be worried about that factor...

If it can't travel well, then my choice is between the mpc 1000 with xlcd or mpc2500.... when I got my mpc 2000xl .. it was so much easier there was no other option.. :)

cheers

Allan

I can understand the xlcd being good for 1000 users because they can finally have a flip screen and stop breaking their necks from craning but I have no desire for an xlcd for my 2500.
jjosxl and the 2500 rokK well without the xlcd.
Still, JJ may add some remarkable updates that I can relate to for only the big screen in the future... so I never say never..

Interesting.. I've seen Nym's very convincing arguments for xlcd with 128xl.. what are the arguments for sticking with the small screen an jjosxl?

not all functions of jjosxl are available on 128xl. patched phrases for example. since i am using this feature quite often i am still on jjosxl.

i hope that 128xl will become as feature-packed as osxl, though.

from the 2500 manual:

“PATCHED PHRASE” is
one sample which has the divided regions and the sequence data for playing the divided regions. You can change the
tempo freely when playing the sequence.

it´s similar to a rex file. you can also change the tune without affecting the sample´s length. plus the adsr envelope(s) affect each individual slices.

i am using this function primary for sampled drum fills. to tune them to the beat.

BAM - this is a very convincing argument for the small screen version at this stage, I've been looking for that kind of feature in hardware for ages...

That along with the LPF from MIDI in ... are making this very difficult.. I can see strong arguments both ways...

Is anyone privy to the development roadmap for JJOS 128xl... that would make the decision easier..

thats the first problem i saw with the xlcd screen. i have my 2500 in a 1714 skb and its as snug as a case can get, almost forced to fit but it fits.. if you want to travel you would need to get a bigger skb/flight case, but also risk it moving around and possibly breaking in a bigger case..

maybe you can use this type of case with the screen up and no foam on the top, but you would need to strap the mp down somehow.. im not sure if there is enough room inside the top lid..

the foam on top is 2 separate vertical strips with adhesive, if you dont use the adhesive you could probably just lay the foam horizontally across the mp and leave the screen flipped up.. looks to be enough room

if you go with the1k, detach the screen altogether and travel separately (put it in a sock?)
i love traveling with my mpc, but don't much anymore.

The 1k screen doesn't look very detachable from the video. :(

If you have read more of Nym's post on the xlcd he clearly states with a extension
you do not have to mount the screen to the MPC.Also external midi control of LPF
and resonance are in the O.S.2XL.
