First off,

Hi! This is my first post. I have spent hours reading info here and now need help.

I recently installed a Crucial 128gb SATA III SSD. I have no problem saving to it, but it tends to hang when trying to load saved projects. Sometimes it will load immediately, sometimes will load slow, but usually just hangs on a sample.

The previous HDD was the standard 7,200rpm and it would simply spin at top speed. I found a hole in the ribbon cable when replacing it with the crucial SSD so I replaced the cable too. Ribbon runs to CD drive and then to SSD.

Memory replaced to see if it was a conflict. Same result of hanging while loading.

I did notice the thread here on this forum talking about how to preform SSD install used a crucial SATA II. Could SATA III be the issue?
Could it be the board the drives connect to? If so wouldn't bad board cause CD drive to malfunction too?

PLEASE HELP! I would be very grateful for any input!

SATA III is backwards compatable, so there shouldn't be any issue there.

There may be some IDE master/slave configuration issues?

does it hang while loading a long sample, or does it crash? does it take longer to load samples/projects than before? even with the SSD it will take a long time to load up projects into RAM. i did not slave the cd drive to the ssd when i installed it, i forgot to hook it up at all. jimfowler had issues with his SSD when the cd drive was connected and found it behaved better with it out of the circuit.

I was thinking this. Any suggestions how to approach such a situation? I know old ide drives used jumpers, but I dont see anything similar on the SSD or HDE adapter. I have the ribbon connect as it was factory, just with a new cable.

I hangs on a random sample and will let me abort, but will stay loading for at least an hour (that's the longest I let it try). Loads within minutes from usb. I'll try to disconnect the CD drive to see if that helps. Hoping I don't have to get rid of the CD as a write option, though.

disconnect your cd drive (remove ribbon from back of drive, no need to do anything else at this point) and report back. make sure you format the new ssd IN the mpc via it's format function.

CD drive unplugged. Powered on and it started searching autoload (I never setup autoload nor is there a folder named such on the SSD). Finally loaded to main screen and froze.

I formatted SSD in the MPC.

Unplugged all and changed global->autoload to off. Plugged CD drive and SSD back in. Loaded project smooth. Reboot to double check... Load project and it hangs on random sample. Unplug CD drive. Reboot. Loads main screen and froze.

Any ideas?

Sure, that's a great temporary workaround.

I also have other gear I could use, but I'm the type of person that likes to fix the actual issue. There is a solution, and I figure such a stocked collective of experienced, bright, individuals can hopefully help figure it out so it's answered for anybody having the same issue in the future. And so my mind finds peace.

I'm still making tunes, but I'm not jacked in 24 hours either.

I am 98% positive the issue is master/slave settings on the ide buss.

refresh my memory. does the ssd drive work if it is the only drive hooked up?
is the ssd drive sata or pata?
Are the any master/slave jumpers on the sata-pata adapter?

SSD as only drive causes MPC to load to main screen and freezes.

SSD is SATA III using HDE SATA to PATA/IDE adapter.

Adapter has no jumpers. CD drive jumper set to slave.

ok

have you tried setting cd to slave?

it feels like your mpc does not like your sata adapter.
Perhaps look for an sata adapter that features master/slave settings?

Does the mpc function with no drives attached?

CD is set to slave. MPC functions without both drives. I'm looking into the adapter, but it's the same used on already successful conversions.

HDE SATA to PATA/IDE Hard Drive Interface Adapter via Amazon

I believe the previous success was based on abandoning the cd drive, I could be misinformed?

I ran into this problem when trying to use a CF to ide adapter. I had to find a CF adapter that had master/slave jumpers

good luck, you seem smart enough to figure this one out.

Thanks for the input, homie. May order new adapter.

Mind crashing.

Maybe MPC gurus will visit in my sleep.

Quick Recap for anyone who views while I slumber:

1. With only SSD, boots to main screen and freezes
2. With CD and SSD (CD set to all settings) boots, main screen, freezes on load
3. Adapter, ribbon cable, and SSD work interfaced to my computer
4. SSD was formatted in MPC
5. Crucial SATA III 2.5" SSD, HDE SATA to PATA/IDE Hard Drive Interface Adapter, replaced ribbon cable for new on after found hole in the original.
