how many of you use this regularly on your kick? i know its pretty sample specific, but i would like to start using the 16 (3) tc more for my kick drums, currently, i mostly only use it for my hihats. i feel this groove will help introduce a whole new set of swing to my beats and up until now it has been really underused. i have used it on one beat that i really liked, but i guess i just want some more tips on using this timing as it is kind of new to me.

thanks

Yes, I used it in this small beat:

I use the 1/16(3) timing for the kicks that come right at the end of a bar so you get that short gap before the first kick of the next bar... it seems to always work fine with that setting... if you were to put it on 1/16 (not triplets) it wouldn't be close enough to the end of the bar... and it would sound not as good. Also, doing it in 1/32 (3) could potentially get it closer to the next kick.. but most of the time I dont want that... and getting the timing exact might take too many re-takes.

Honestly though, I dont often chop drum breaks that tight, so it winds up sounding loose in the end with the 1/16(3) setting...

for hats, I usually go with 1/16, snares can be done on 1/8..

ah, i can really tell in that beat debauch, it gives the kicks a nice pick up swing. that shit knocks, i really like how the the hi hats that go faster after each other at the end of the loop too. those two drums really compliment each other. are those tripilets too?

also, did you quantize the main sample to tripilets as well? it doesnt sound like it, but sometimes i feel like i have to do that a little bit for the kicks to work with it. other times it seems to work out fine.

what do you guys usually do? do you just leave the melody strait and then just tripilet the drums, or do you tripilet the melody and the drums so they match each other better?

i hardly ever use 8th note quantize, i feel like 16th notes gets me where i want to be and if it doesnt, i just re-do it.

the swing that i never ever use is 8th note tripilets, i feel like the space is too wide between hits and it makes the beat sound out of time usually.

thanks for the replies guys.

I never use 1/16 for kicks except for beats at a really slow tempo(under 83 or 84 bpm). I use 1/16(3) most of the time, but with full level turned off for that specific triplet kick. Or i just quantize all my kicks at 1/16 except the triplets kicks that i record with no quantize.

if I remember correct... I did the snare first which is straight on the tick at 1/8.. I probably left the timing at 1/16 which is the default when the machine is turned on.. I think then I dialed it over to the next track and then while the cursor was up at that area of town I popped it to 1/16(3)... and did the kicks.. then switched to another track to do the stuttering kicks at the end of the bars because incase the timing didn't sound right I didn't want to redo the whole thing again. After that hats.. I dont think I did the hats at triplets because usually the hats have air at the beginning of the sample.. I never really do triplets on that unless the song calls for it.

For the sample, actually... it isn't in too many parts (or cuts) it has only a few pieces.. maybe 3 or 4... so that is done probably on 1/16(3) simply because I didn't bother going over to switch it to another timing... it could have been done on 1/16... there is no fancy stuff going on with that particular sample.

that beat is quite basic, it was done fairly quickly on a live ustream session a good while back. I did a bunch of small beats on there live and that was the only one I wasn't too lazy to actually track into the computer... however in ustream there is a button you can click so you can record a clip from the stream to save to your page... what I did was I clicked the audio only option and then clicked record so I could save what I did on that day's session.

when I want those little quick pickup kicks and stuff, I just don't quantize, mostly.

If I do still want quantized drums on the beats, I'll do the same the borat said, unquantize for just the triplet drums.
