noob : can i unassign pad velocity to sample amplitude

I want a fixed velocity for now.

but i assume the 4k has the 'full velocity' button, and allows sample volume adjustment

Please get hold of the reference manual and READ IT. Look at the machine in front of you, read the labelling of the buttons and press them to see where they take you or what they can do. There is no excuse for not reading the manual if you are serious about working with the MPC4000.

Take your time and be patient with it, you will not crack this machine overnight. As a 'noob' you will likely run into some problems along the way. So instead of starting a new thread for every question you are unable to find answers to in the reference manual read some old threads, watch some youtube videos and experiment with your machine. We all understand how daunting the MPC4000 can be at first, so keep all your questions in one thread until you have a basic understanding of the machine.

We will try to guide you, but you gotta put in some time and effort yourself otherwise you never understand how the machine actually works as opposed to what to do in a given situation. Can I ask you...

1. Is this your first MPC?
2. Are you new to music production/ sampling?
3. Have you got the MPC4000 Reference Manual?

By the way, the Reference Manual v1.0 was never updated to take account of the dozen or so Operating System updates that Akai released over the subsequent 3 or so years.
I did a marked-up PDF noting all the changes - it's the Files section of the MPC4000 Yahoo Group - you'd do well to find that.

1st thing - clint is right. rtfm. all the questions you are asking aren't even "newbie" questions - they're "i'm not even trying" and that's not gonna net you much help here. that having been said...

2nd thing - there's a button labeled "full level" to the left of the pads. push it. you managed to find the power button on your own...i trust you can find this one as well.

Your answer to question one will make this harder for you, but your answer to question two should make it easier. You know how they make you read at Uni if you want to pass? You did pass didn't you? University educated wont help you around here, but the manuals will...videos like this will also help you to pull it all together.
