You could sit here with your service manuals all day man; The mpc 2000 and mpc 3000 are two totally different machines. The software is very different. In fact R linn made his own software upgrade for the mpc 3000 for improvements; you lose some sequence memory but hey; with clever coding he got it done.
Digital audio is largely about algorithms and samplings of musical signals. These signals are represented as 1s and 0s, like computer code, and then they are converted to analog wave forms and amplified as music. When you're dealing with logic-based formulas and computer code, it's hard to understand how one digital signal processor (DSP) could produce a better, or more natural, sound than another and why it should cost more.

Buzz Goddard, vice president of Harman International's Lexicon subsidiary, says that the way parts are laid out on a circuit board is largely what determines the actual sound. "Twisting a diode 90 degrees when you place it on a circuit board can affect the product's signal-to-noise ratio, and understanding how only comes from experience," he says. This kind of attention to sonic detail can't be applied to mass-produced products with a shelf life of two years, he says.

The quality of the engine, on the other hand, is fairly irrelevant to the sound, Goddard maintains. "The quality of a DSP engine is like a Pentium chip. It either works or it doesn't. It's the software you write that determines how things sound," he says.

Most DSP circuits use canned programs because they're inexpensive. The result is a very 2-dimensional, processed sound that many people have come to associate with digital signal processing. The DSP modes found on low- to midpriced receivers simulate acoustical environments like stadiums, concert halls and jazz clubs–but not well. Custom DSP software allows manufacturers to manipulate parameters not even available with electromechanical devices–things like room acoustics, correcting for imperfections in transducer technology in loudspeakers and adding psychoacoustic phenomena.
The research into these new areas and the intensive, time-consuming nature of writing software for DSP circuits is what makes Lexicon's DC-1 surround-sound processors sell for $2000 to $4500. The three processors use the same box, but the software inside determines retail price. "It's the same reason I pay $300 for Microsoft Office when the actual CD-ROM only costs $2 to make," Goddard says.

While Lexicon's surround-sound processors are all-digital products, CD players have to convert digital signals to analog output, a process that produces noise. Theta Digital sells CD products ranging from a $700 digital-to-analog converter to an $11,000 2-piece 5A CD player, which includes DAC and CD transport. The sound-quality differences between CD players, according to Theta president Neil Sinclair, are attributable to three areas: computing power, choice of power supplies and circuitry.
Mass-market CD players use digital decoders with limited intelligence and a fixed microprocessor. Theta Digital uses high-speed programmable digital processing chips, and, as a result, they can do a more complete job of decoding the digital signal. Midpriced CD players don't have the computer power to deal with time and phase, which results in a lower-resolution output. Theta CD players incorporate Motorola's 56000 series chips, which deliver 48-bit processing for a manufacturing cost of about $100 a chip. A mass-market CD player, by contrast, typically packs a 20-bit processor that costs about $2 to $3.

Using separate power supplies and transformers for digital and analog circuitry is also important to the final result. Isolating power supplies minimizes the amount of spurious noise that occurs when the signal goes from digital to analog and analog to digital. Theta's $11,000 CD player is actually three separate chassis: a digital section, an audio section and the transport. Sinclair says they do it that way so that noise doesn't radiate from one section to another. The flagship system also uses Class A analog circuitry, as opposed to the more common and less expensive Class A/B type, which produces less distortion and a more controlled signal.

U could sit there with your manuals all day man. And make yourself believe that the same sound quality is coming out of both machines (LOL) I know it sounds arrogant but there is a difference in build and quality. The mpc 2000xl sounds shitty. It really does; but if you hook it up to a good mixing board u can make it sound great. Well; ill leave it at that; because I have an mpc 4000; I used to own the 2000/xl and the 3000. I can tell you that the sound quality of the mpc 4000 rivals any sampler/drum machine out on the market today. It really is impressive.

It was not an upgrade and has only one added feature. It simply allows the MPC3000 to load multiple MPC60 disks and is not intended to operate under that OS (3.12). It was actually a fix from an earlier OS coding `mistake`.

The software between the MPC's is not that different. Akai owned the MPC3000 OS when they developed the MPC2000. Much like they transferred much of the S3000 OS to the S2000, the MPC2000 OS is the MPC3000 OS with improvements. Akai did NOT make up the MPC2000 OS from scratch.

Umm, how is this revelent when the MPC3000 and MPC2000(XL) use the same DSP?

I'm not arguing that analog component layout makes a difference, but layout does not matter with digital signals. They are all ones or zeros no matter what direction they are pointing. Aside from that, that fact that sounds are transferred by DSP does not `color` the sound. The references Godddard makes in your quote refer to intentionally coloring the sound (i.e. effects processing) and NOT relevent to anything as simple as playback from memory (which any DSP coder can do and they all do it nearly identically).

Like I said: u could sit and debate this all day; the 2000 and the 3000 are two very different machines. How the uckf can you say the OS's are similar? What r u drunk?! I suppose there's no difference with cheesy os code for mp3 encoders; tell me all mp3 encoders using the same dsp and processing in the same computer encoded at 128 and 160kbps all sound the same (LOL) :-)

Compared to earlier software versions, this update improves the quality of the amp models and also fixes a number of bugs.
What's that; the software update using the same dsp, same everything improved the quality of the amp models!
Software can also be used to add features that the machine is capable of achieving. The software updates for the mpc 2000/xl were always feature and bug updates. Not quality improvement; like the adrenalinn.

u need to stop it right there. Wonder why the 3000 can't read mpc 2000 native files; wait; the os wasn't built from scratch; at the very least it should be able to read an mpc 2000 snd file. ooops; u can't u need mike goins SOFTWARE to do it. SOFTWARE!
I'll say it again; SOFTWARE and yes circuitry and build seperate the 2000 and the 3000. And yes you can load the same sound and hear the difference. There are articles about listening tests and how the ear can't differentiate between similar sounds from different sources after repeated listens.
If it'll make you happy; the MPC 2000 and the MPC 3000 sound exactly the same because you say so; LOL :-) NO WAY!!!!

Huh? What does that have to do with the MPC? Nothing.

Again, like the Andrenalin, mp3 encoders purposely digitally modify the sound. MPC's DSP engine does not. DSP that performs sample playback is not even related to lossy encoding or effects processing.

Umm, I hate to break it to you, but that is simply due to the fact that the MPC3000 was developed before the MPC2000. The MPC3000 was not improved upon after the release of the MPC2000. Ever wonder why the MPC2000 can read MPC60 and MPC3000 disks?

You really have no idea the information I have access too. I am not sure if you know who this is (not that I am anyone important), but you know me.

Look man; i'm not tryin to be a pain in the arse; it's all in fun man; I just happen to believe that the two units are very different as far as sound goes. The mpc 3000 sounds meatier man; I also do believe that the os has alot to do with how the dsp processes the information from digital to analog.
I mean no disrespect; I have a 4000; i no longer have and mpc 3000 or 2000. When I did; I just felt that there was a difference in sound quality; the cd-roms I used was dance mega synth and dance mega drums 1; to be exact. Dance mega synth wasn't great on the mpc 3000 cause it didn't loop the samples; but the synths sounded a bit richer; the dance mega drums were really a bit different; I had to adjust the output of the 2000xl to 6db; the loudness was there but the punchiness just wasn't; a trip to the efx cards filter section satisfied me.
Sorry if I came off like an arse! If I had to make a choice it would be the 2kxl because of the onboard wave editing (u can see the wave) and the ammount of samples and programs you can have at once. when you hear your pads actually loop it's pretty neat. I'm a feature freak and the 2kxl has so many more features than the 3000 but there's no mistaking the sound of the 3000 IMHO.
I really thought that article made sense; it opened my eyes as far as build and quality of all the other components. And twisting a resistor here and there; worked in shop class for me in high school. I won't question you or your source; but i'll stick to my guns as far as my personal experience with both machines.
Again my apologies; I was what you would call poking fun while trying to share the article and the info on dsp and build as well as software that made the difference in quality between the players. My reference to adrenalinn was just that with some new code that they improved the quality of their amp models.

It is always fun jumping into this debate. Regardless of what the Japanese/Chinese manufactures wrote in the technical manuals of these units, they use completely different parts with varying quality. This is obvious by opening up both units. When I sample directly into the 3000 and do the same with the 2000, my ears hear a difference. The sound of the 3000 is better to me but I sold mine anyway and use the 2000. Why, because the 2000 is cheaper and people are willing to pay top dollar for the 3000 because it "sounds" better. I mainly use the sequencer and most of my sounds come from my Triton Studio so it really doesn't matter which MPC I use. You can make hot tracks with both of these units.

Like what? I have two units open here. Sure there are a couple differences, SCSI controller, LCD driver, floppy controller, but anything that touches the audio signal is the same. I would be glad to hear you cite specific examples of completely different parts.

The MPC 3000 uses the sound engine of the Akai 3000 sampler. The MPC 2000 uses the sound engine of the 2000. The expansion board which gives the MPC 2000 XL it's 8 outs are completely different in the standard 8 outs in the MPC 3000. If you do indeed have them both open, you can can see this obviously. In addition to that, the MPC 3000 outputs are balanced and the outputs of the 2000 are unbalanced. The MPC 2000 output imp is 100 and the MPC 3000 is 600. The CPUs of of these units are different but that doesn't have any effect on the sound. I am curious why someone would claim that these units are the same. The signal to noise ratio is different. Most of the people deciding to buy one of these units will never have the oppurtunity to open up the MPC's and do a comparison. Regardless of what people claim, they are two different units with different parts. I have used both of these units, the original 2000 and the 4000. I have extensive knowledge and experience with these units. I sell used MPCs on the side and open them up to install options constantly. Check out my rep on Ebay under the same user name. yah dog ima go with MPC 3000 on this one.

I have been looking since waaaaayyy back when I was in on a conversation like this one on here. I have also done the blind sound test as MPC 3000 has suggested and nobody can even come close to getting 10 right.

The tech info, (and I asked a buddy who is an EECS grad from Berkeley so he knows WAy more about this stuff then me, I wont say he knows more then y'all, cuz I cant condescend to make that statement 8) )
but he has looked at the guts (and after he stopped laughing when I told him how much they cost) he told me that the parts inside them were pretty much the same. Manufaturing of audio component parts, is a pretty controlled environment, IE they actually can replicate the same thing, every time by programming the computer who makes the parts.

he also broke down digital audio pretty much the same way that MPC 3000 did in this thread.

just a chime in on the debate.

No, the MPC3000 uses the parts from the S3000 sampler and the MPC2000 uses the parts from the S2000 sampler. What no one has told you is that the S2000 uses the parts from the S3000 sampler. Akai did not invent anything new here.

Wrong here. None of the outputs are balanced.

No, both use a 16mHz V53. The 2k uses a 'a' designation to allow a larger OS, but even you agree that this does not affect the sound (yes, I actually have the NEC V-series processor manuals here).

I have never compared the 8-out of the MPC2000 since it is considered an expansion and would not be comparing stock MPC to stock MPC for fairness sake. I can look at the 8-out schematics and make a conclusion later.

You should also note that these are measured differently. The MPC3000 was measured at 6dBm and the MPC2000 was measured at 17dBu. Measuring the MPC2000 at 6dBm and you will find it is 600 ohms.

I cannot find any S/N info in the techincal docs.

Umm, using them is a far cry from other technical considerations. I drive a car, but I make no claims in being an expert in auto repair or design.

The MPC 3000 does have balanced outputs. Page 221 in my Japanese manual in black -n- white. I was trying to download the english manual from Akai to give you the link to it and page number but they redone their site and left off there older products.

As far as sound tests goes....An average ear can not here many things. Meaning, everyone is not an engineer. Yeah, I can mix a rough draft of a song and it can sound good to me. But a professional engineer would probably laugh at my mix.

Again, I am not trying to convince anyone to buy a 3000. Get which everone you can afford. I use to the 2000. Each of the MPC's units have their own personality and are not the same.

I really don't understand why someone would claim that they use the same parts when this is not true.

By the way, I am an MPC authority :-) I build, drive, test, and own them.

The MPC 2000 was not measured at 17dbu. This is the max ouput of the unit. We are reading from the same manuals.

Most highend professional gear has balanced outputs including the MPC 3000. Please re-read your manual. I already gave you the page number to find the info :D

The MPC3000 output stage amplifiers
are fed from it's convertor stage in a balanced fashion. To
maintain compatability with most types of device they are likely to
be used with, the output of these drive stage amplifiers is
interfaced to the rear jacks in an unbalanced fashion. ( ASR10 /
ECHO LAYLA24 are similar in this regard ) .

In other words the outputs are unbalanced. If you look at the schematics (which I have) this is easily apparent. If you traced the circuits, you could see this too. I really do not care what the manual says, there are other mistakes too.

I am not going to argue about this to anyone that claims to `build` MPCs. If you actually did, this would imply that work at the Chinese plant that uses machinery to build MPC's. Building MPC's would also imply that you would actually have part numbers to support your argument, which you have not cited. Part number could easily support you argument, if you actually knew them. So tell me, does a PCM69AP go in the MPC2000 or MPC3000?

The MPC 3000 has balanced outputs period. It is clearly stated in the owners manual. I even gave you the page number in my earlier post. One more time for anyone who missed it. PAGE 221 of the MPC 3000s user manual says that the MPC 3000s outputs are balanced. PAGE 168 of the MPC 2000 owners manual clearly state the the outputs on the 2000 are unbalanced. There is no need to debate this any further. You can contact Akai tech support and they will confirm that the balanced outputs on the MPC 3000 is a fact if you can't get your hands on the owners manual. The MPC 4000 also has balanced outputs.

www.akaipro.com is the web address for Akai if you want to check into this further. And just like in court...if you get caught lying on the stand..pretty much anything you say can't be trusted. Find out this fact for yourself so you can weed out some of these user reviews.

Someone plug some headphones into the outputs and see if they get a signal in both speakers already!
