My new sampling app: BeatCleaver

looks like a great little app, but what i miss is the RECORD button.

i never understand, that sampling/beatslicing apps can`t even sample.
it`s so frustrating to fire up a daw only for recording stuff. then to start recycle, snapper, or what ever....

otherwise, great idea, keep it going!

ive been looking for an app like this for ios devices for a while with no luck.. any plans to make an ios version????????

dreadnutz: Naw, I agree, putting a record button is definitely on my TODO list.

inflict3: Sorry, I don't currently have plans for an iOS version. I'd like to stay focused on the desktop right now because that's my main strength as a developer.

Just out of interest, does BeatCleaver maintain your bit depth and sample rate of whatever you chop in it?

Everything is processed internally at the same bit depth and sample rate as the original file, but right now when you export/save, it gets converted to 16-bit / 44100 Hz stereo WAVE (integer), which is the most compatible format.

Lots of people are looking for more export options though so it's on my TODO list, though I don't have a timeline yet for when we'd see that feature in a release.

just got around to purchasing this app without even trying it cos it looked so awesome.. and it is! love the simplicity of the navigation.


my 2 cents are:

1 - it would be good for it to somewhere visually show the name of the currently open file.

2 - the quick export function is awesome. but it would also be good to be able to drag a slice to a separate folder (as a way of saving it) other than the one that the original file is in...
(maybe : right click > drag slice...) - if it can do that already and i'm jumping the gun apologies!

or maybe:
each slice gets some sort of tiny button on it than can be easily clicked and dragged.

In response to your points:
1) Putting the name in the titlebar was a quick fix, and should be fixed in the updated packages I just uploaded! If you clear your browser's cache and hit the link in your registration email again, you should be able to snag the update.

2) Yeah, being able to drag and drop the slices to export them would be super handy, I agree! I'm going to try to look at how I can work this into a future update...

i am also finding that sometimes when i play a slice it does not play from the start of the slice..but sometimes its does.

for example - i slice a snare from a loop.. graphically the slice starts with the initial attack - and sometimes it will play that, but sometimes it starts after the attack it and plays a small portion from the start of the next slice instead.

the file that it creates from saving that slice always includes the full length of the slice though.

not sure if its program glitch or my audio drivers..

Got to use BeatCleaver last night for a few hours and purchased it!

For the simplicity, ease of the features already offered in the program and price it was an easy decision.

I would use this program to chop up full songs. If I'm using a short phrase that will require less than 16 chops I use maschine.

I do have the Mikro, but I like that I can save individual slices/elements I want from a sample and leave the rest.

Did I mention it's EASY!!!

Workflow:
I slice the whole song using the insert slice option and save the chops to my desktop folder. From there I import them into Maschine. I choose which slices I like best and drag them to a pad. I label the slices to stay organized and do some further editing, loop recording to get these slices just right!

It may seem like another step to some but this works great for me.


WISHLIST
One option I would like to see is a "Fade In" "Fade Out" option. Once you export the samples I do not want to go back into BeatCleaver and adjust start and end point. This would be a great feature for chopping instumentals.

Better yet, some simple EQ, pitch, reverb, delay!!! etc... and do so on a slice by slice basis.

If you could hit maybe, lets say, the space bar when you want to insert a slice point would be nice.

Here's a BIG ONE....an UNDO button if you accidently, like I did move the slice point instead of clicking on the slice to hear it, which I did a few times and was extremely frustrated. There is nothing like getting that slice just right with no clicks or pops and the having to reposition...time wasted:(

Also a feature that tells you the bpm of the track once you drop it in would be BOSS!

Overall GREAT program and I would recommend it to anyone who samples!

Good job on the app! Just curious, but would it be possible to add a few more functions to it, like the ability to sample? Maybe a simple EQ to get the drums sounding right or a way to organize and playback samples by midi?

Hey Apollo, thanks for the review and the great feedback! I'm still reading and still listening!

I completely agree with the fade in/out and extra effects, those would be awesome to have. Undo is a biggie too, but I'm not sure that one's going to happen just quite yet. There will be a point when it's I definitely have to do it before anything else though.

I'm just getting warmed up again and for the next version, I've added the ability to drag the current loop around, which slides the slice points along with it. You can find some cool loops using this technique.

As another starter task, I've been itching to change the slice buttons to make it so that they ONLY slice within the current loop. Would that be more useful? That way, if you load up a big song, you can mark a big loop and then chop it into 4/8/16 with those buttons instead of having those chop the entire song. (Was that too confusing?)

Anyways, if anyone has any objections to changing that behaviour, please let me know! (speak now or..... )
