How many drum machines do you own?.

Getting a maschine but was wondering is it silly idea to buy a mpc 2500 again for old times sake?. Its a fantastic piece of kit but do you guys own more than 1 drum machine and how do you justify it?:).

I'm actually the opposite, i've been working with the 2500 and i was thinking about scooping up an MK2. But i think its best to master the equipment you have first, then if you're still thinking about it, go and buy it then.

I pretty much grew up on a mpc but there's something about maschine which is more immediate and generally easier when sketching out beats than on a mpc.

I want both but I guess one is going to be uses less than the other.

i think if you were good enough with either of them, then you wouldn't need another.. I'd only be able to justify it if i needed to do something so complex that it could not be done with just one sequencer, where you absolutely need to use them both at the same time to do it.. like having 3 sequences playing at the same time.. i've felt that the 2nd sequence feature on the mpc is not enough sometimes, and then the only way would be to have yet another sequencer triggered at the same time.. but still, that wouldn't be enough to justify going out and buying an expensive tool for that alone as there are simple workarounds.. so I'd see it as a huge waste of cash, so to me it would be to have it just for the sake of having it.. which has very little to do with music... but then if you have enough money, to the point where it doesn't matter what you spend it on, then I'd just go for it anyway.. and if it were a case of not being sure what's best for you.. i would just see if i can rent or borrow one for long enough to justify making the buy.. plenty of people just buy things just from liking the idea of something, it sounding good in theory to them, but then later find out it's less suited for them when it comes down to actually putting it to practice in the long run.

I've owned more than one drum machine/sequencer at the same time, but then it has been for sound reasons, like using the Elektron Machinedrum as a soundmodule, as it is also a synth.

If we're including MPC's 6. If we don't, I have one, a lowly TR-505.

All my MPC's were dead cheap so I went overboard. But Ibunshi is pretty much right mastering any one, in this case MPC, is going to somewhat negate the need for other ones, unless another MPC has a feature or features that would really fit your workflow or how you'd like to change your workflow.

If I had the chance to do it over again I would have stopped at maybe 2 MPC's and if I got other drum boxes would go for stuff that are different yet complementary to an MPC like the Elektron gear Ibunshi brought up.

if i can get a good deal on some gear I'll buy it. I got an MPC2000XL, Roland MV-8000, TR-626, TR-808, TR-909 & the ever impressive....

You got the top two TR's. More than offsets a Casio.

Love the mpc but its a **** tracking out and I normally end up at Ableton anyway, the maschine would circumvent that plus I like the idea of aslo resampling all my stuff on the mpc and ableton into the mpc again.

Yeah I use all three of the things you mentioned and I still keep the Hardware for the versatility you mentioned. But as you can guess Live's quickness make it the main thing I use really.

Mpc 2500 is my main tool

Mpc 1000 for when I'm outside the house/ back up

Ableton Live. Midi'ed up with my mpc gives me Daw flexibility with that straight forward mpc sequencing.

But since I have a macbook I rather take that one with me with a midi controller and ableton instead of the mpc 1000.

I own 6. Its good to have different weapons, they bring out different styles. If they all operated the same, then you're just doing the same and better off with one. But since they're all different from different manufacturers with their different operations, your output will be totally fresh and different from what you're accustomed to.

I switch everytime and get something I would never do on the other machine. Its great and you should get any machine you can to expand your horizon. It'll be like ripping someone's scalp clean off and then pissing on his skull, its that dope.

I've had various drum machines and samplers over the years, but I would rather fill obvious gaps in my setup before I start duplicating the functionality I already have.

If your sound is near 100% sample based then I can understand wanting several different samplers. I kinda wish I had kept my SP202.

Yeah, quotes are free, take the whole lot. I went cold turkey on weed since September to expand my mind. I wanted creativity to come from self instead of assistance, and so I went up to the jagged mountains to push my skills even further. Spent many weeks tolerating the urges and headaches as I wrote and recorded sounds blindfolded and standing on spiked rocks. After this, I'm going back to the swamps with this new found power and destroy cities again.

A Roland TR-808, TR-909 and a TR-606, an Alesis HR-16 and a Yamaha RY-30. So that's 5 in total.
