I actually generally don't , but I used it to maintain clarity with the OP's statement. I prefer to just call it what is, House, Jungle, Breaks and so on.

Although EDM as a naming convention doesn't bug me 1/100th that IDM does. Intelligent Dance Music is just so pretentious a name.

I call it Electronica or its genres in particular, as in House Techno, DnB, Trance, Jungle, Trip Hop, etc. I watched this music grow from its infancy. Its the bastard child of Hip Hop born out of drum machines and heavy drugs.

It's only as pretentious as the music itself.

Hip Hop and Electronic music are on evolutionary parallel lines. They cross paths at various points but one doesn't come from the other.

I usually call all the styles by name as well, Techno, House, Tech-House, Progressive-House, Jungle, DnB, Electronica, etc..... EDM or just Electronic Music is what I call the overall whole when describing it to someone who doesn't know specific genres.

I think the styles have crossed over a lot since I was going clubbing between the mid 90s to the mid 2000s. There was a lot more definition between the sub genres back then.

Yeah there is definitely a big blur between Progressive-House, Prog-Trance, Melodic Techno, and Tech-house

that was a funny to wake up too. i thought i had a bad mouth till i read any of ill greens posts :-D

i have a good friend that owns a house label. and he is always bitching about not being stereo typed "with this american pop joke called edm. only america can take a genre and run it to the dirt. called pop. once the corp. hand is on the music they turn it to pop. Jazz/rock and hip hop all watered down to only being a select few artists that keep the original style of ones genre. in the ninetys you started hearing rap in cartoons and movies. now electronic music has the corporate fist choking that genre. i was just watching the cartoon movie robots with my 2 yr old and they stared clubbing to electronic dance music....

the good thing is that many of the originators are still alive and will get to really shine while its still not 100% pop. allot of those guys only got to make cash on dj shows now they are eating off making tracks. so big ups to them.

Yeah I love some Aphex or Squarepusher and Autechere is dope but all 3 would likely be the first to laugh at the moniker. And anybody who wears the label willingly is likely a prat.
