MPC Studio Software on a External HDD

I recently purchased a external HDD (Seagate Slim 500gb) to carry around all my beats and drum kits, along with the majority of my beats. I was curious if the MPC Studio software was capable of running out of my external HDD if I downloaded it onto my hard-drive and than attempted to run it on another computer.

Would it work?

I'm using a PC. What if I tried running it on a Mac?

You'll need to do the original installation as standard to the boot drives, but after the fact you can set up symbolic links to move the sound libraries to your external drive. (Search for my post related to mac osx symbolic link program)

This gets around the fact that as of 1.2, the software doesn't offer the option to install the sample library on external or secondary internal drives. Come on Akai, this is 2013, the year of the SSD!

Applications will need to remain on the boot drive as far as I know.

yeah installing on cloud storage might have been cool.

Not a Ren owner but I am an all around computer geek with both OS's. I would say no and OS X will likely make it harder as often times a .dmg won't allow you to select the install location let alone choose a different HD. Or many will force the app to the system drive and allow a choice for library location (Native Instruments .dmg' work like that.

But even if an app will let you install on external it often isn't a good idea. The apps expect to be on a system drive, so even on a 7200RPM HD you might get decreased performance over an internal system drive install.

Apps on system drive and samples on an external or 2nd internal is always the move though. Some smaller apps are programmed in "portable" versions so you can run off a USB stick or even a full external HDD. It's mostly used on Anti Virus so it can run on a compromised terminal.

But I think the Ren software would need to be recompiled to be useable in a "portable" context.

Was really hoping for the power of USB 3.0. I don't get how Akai markets the MPC Studio as a "portable" way to produce music when it's incapable of being plug and played into other computers without having to authorize the software and than downloading it.

This is frustrating, I'm really hoping Akai steps their game up with 1.3

Honestly iLok or e-licenser are the best and maybe only way to solve the dongle/activation dilemmas for the mobile guys. On iLok plugs that also have an alternate method like Melodyne you can choose to make your license iLok or the companies standard method. If Akai wants to do business with iLok it's very easy to see a compromise solution.

That's gonna cost you $50 or double for a backup/secondary key, but I do find it very convenient that I could put stuff on 12 computers if need be and show I'm legitimate on all of them.
