Hi Gang,
I've been away for a long bit.
Sold my old MPC1000 blue + red with JJOS and upgraded pads a couple of years ago.
Totally regret it!!
Back in the day before the akai upgrades I actually purchased some of Nym's home brew pads.. yes that was a while ago! :)

Anywayz, am moving over to Japan with my mrs in a couple of weeks and am considering buying a used mpc and putting JJ in it.. yes, I miss my mpc.
I especially love running samples through an old tape machine into it..
will be getting one of those too!

Anyway, the big question is, what MPC1000's do I avoid?
Or more what ones have the best pads?
MPC1000B, MPC1000BK, MPC1000BK-N?
guessing I should avoid the blue and red ones like the clap :)
Am buying used so I want to try and avoid one with dodgy pads..

I wouldn't shy away from the blue and red model not if the previous owner had installed the pad upgrade kit (it replaces the original poorly designed individual senors and pads for interlink senors and pads as installed on other mpc's in the range) You may be able find a blue and red 1000 with pad upgrade and maybe JJOS for a decent price.

Also just be careful as some off the black 1000s that were shipped out had the old pads inside and not the new upgraded ones. To tale if you have the new pads you can do this little test

Good luck on finding a 1000 and welcome back :smoker:

yep, black mpc≠new pads. mine is a black case one, even a black back panel with the jacks and all, and it still needed the upgrade.
AFAIK though, the product number BK-N definitely means the new pads. (am I correct?)

I would say forget about the serial number as that is not 100% accurate method as mines a BK with the new pads, Akai were dead sneaky with using up left over old pads and shipping them in new models. The only way to know is to A) move any of the pads, if the nearest pad moves with it you have the new style or B) pull the corner of pad 4 for example and see if the lip of the pad pops up over the case. But the only 100% safe way would to be to open it up and have a look.
