E-MU SP1200 Faceplate Restoration

So the E-MU SP1200 (original grey model) has a clear protective film covering the faceplate, but after all these years it is peeling off in places. The actual paintwork on the faceplate underneath is fine, its just that the peeling film makes the box look mad grimey and battered.


On this SP1200 above (not mine) you can clearly see the protective film peeling quite badly.

This is my SP1200. The peeling is not too bad, mainly on the right side and around the trigger pads.

On this minty fresh SP1200 you can see how it should look.

Has anyone had any experience of removing this clear film, need to make her look her best. Also has anyone put a Styleflip skin of the original faceplate on a tired looking SP1200? My SP1200 doesnt actually look too bad, I could live with it. Just looking at my options. Renato Rizoli, GhostInMPC or any of you guys know sumthin? Is there a source for replacement faceplates for the SP1200?

Same applies to Renato Rizoli, I guess some people are solely motivated by money. Happy to take but uncomfortable with giving. Only here for one reason, and could learn the art of sharing from Bruce Forat and Mike at MPC Stuff...

I also emailed customsynth about a week ago, no reply yet.

I'm not brave enough to put a hair dryer to my SP1200, the peel remains.

On another note Clint, probably wouldn't want to hit a $2000+ instrument with a heat gun without knowing what will happen well in advance. Maybe you could try and contact sonseelye (?). He was a user here and was always posting up DIY custom gear pics (Tech 12's and MPC2KXL's)....haven't seen him post in a long min, but maybe he would reply to a PM

You could get it customized with some fresh colors or such? Would also increase second hand value. (Depending on how much the restoration is)


Stupid question: Is there a possiblity peelin the film yourself and applying a new one? (Of course you'd have to find a film that could be fitted on there.)

Well its the film on that first pic which makes it look grimey, when the film comes off the faceplate looks just fine underneath, and mine isnt so bad. Custom paintwork would be a last resort for me, I prefer to keep things in their orignal colour scheme.

hi i found the only way to restors the faceplate was to change it for a replica , once you start to take off the original film , ( that was applied to protect the text ) removes the text with it , i use label remover to help release the glue from the label , and then clean it after by scraping it off , once this is done the case can be washed in soapy water , rinsed and dried , the case could then be resprayed / touched up if needed , a new replica sticker can then be applied , and the holes cut out with a craft knife , at the moment i havent any left , but could do a run if anyone is interested in ordering any , they would work out at about £20 + shipping each , mail me at [email protected] if interested or find me on facebook http://www.facebook.com/#!/custom.synth
