2000 Classic Stereo Output Problem

Last night I turned on my 2000 Classic and I was surprised to find the right channel of the stereo output not working. I tested everything I could think of to make sure that the MPC was the problem and nothing else in my setup.

I have the MPC going stereo out to a small mixer (until I have space for a bigger mixer for the 8 outs) and then out of the mixer to my monitors.

From what I have gathered from Google and this site search, it may be a cracked solder on the board?

What are my options? I think I may take it apart now to check the RAM and ensure the connectors are in place. Does anyone have any more recommendations?

If it comes down to it, I would consider replacing the ADDA board, but it would be a last resort.

Start small before you replace entire PCBs. Look for dirt in connections and the input. It's amazing how many times a problem was there (like dirt or loose connection) and just took time to manifest into a real issue. If it was working recently that gives me hope, I don't think a solder point would just break in half randomly.

unless I'm mistaken the "headphone" output spits out the same sounds as the "left" and "right" dual outputs. have you also lost the right channel in the headphone output?

Another thing that always goes wrong with vintage gear is the pots get dirty. roll the main volume knob back and forth for a minute and if you start to hear any crackle out of the monitor, you gotta keep rocking it and the connection will come back.


It doesn't sound like you're describing a RAM issue. If you have a problem with the RAM it's usually frozen screens, glitched sounds, and the dreaded "Div. Error @ 3000:00F4" (or whatever it says). I had this so bad I resolved to go back to just 2MB internal. 2MBs not for everyone but I couldn't be happier because I NEVER lose any work!

I am missing the right channel in the headphone port as well.

There is no crackle in the volume knob, though there is from the record gain knob.

As I am moving the pot around it crackles and will have some sound from the right channel. I have a .pgm loaded and I'm not sure why, but I can hear more of the right channel when I tap a kick drum, other percussion does not work as well.

EDIT: I think I found the problem, whenever I push down on the record volume pot, I can hear it sounds from both channels. If I do not push down on it, then its back to the issue.

It seems as though I fixed it. I opened up the MPC and tightened down the pot, and I now have sound from both channels.

same thing happened to me. having volume pot issues, opened it up, looked at it right, closed it up, works.
