whether or not that was aimed at you bravo the dude has a point...dance music is generally a lot harder to mix well than hiphop- and drum n bass is probably the hardest of dance music to get right- certain producers have skills depending on the genre...penfold needs to learn those skills what ever genre he wants to do...its about the right gear but its more about the right skills...ive heard real sickness mixed on some pretty sparse bedroom setups....timeless anyone?

Damn! I grew up on that DnB from a youth and I must say it has come a long way and through many transistions, but even then to now them mixes have sounded BAAAAD! I would not be suprised that its probably harder to mix than a hip hop tune... anyway I'm learning I'm learning!!

Hey BRAVO u still wanna listen to my shiit mix?

Point taken but I think the proof is in the puddin......Just listen to the difference for yourself. UK hip hop production Vs US. UK Pop Vs US. UK Indie/Rock Vs US Indie/Rock...I think you'l find there is a difference.

The same can be said about producers to a certain extent....For example, the way the US producers Cut vocals is different to the way "I have see guys over here do it"...My point was simply that the process is different

Agreed that a certain skill is needed per genre but im only going by what I have experienced.

D&B has got to by the only exception. Dance music is a very complex genre to mix but remember these guys understand it. They grew with it and enhanced it themselves. Dillinja has got to be one of the best at mixing down D&B. I say the same about Rock music....Jimmy D has got to be one of the best Engineers in the world, and he came from a Rock backround

....Just my viewpoint

Penfold,Yea cool....I'll listen

oh there is a difference...you only have to listen to house music...uk is slightly more cold and clinical wheras US is warm and smooth...of course french normally has the best sonic balance...so do agree that there are differences but to say that the american sound is clearer than the uk sound really does depend on genre/producer/song.....

dre for example has mad loud and punchy sounds all with clarity but check his audio files and visually they resemble squarewaves...its limited to buggery....uk hiphop production doesn't tend to rely so much on pushing the whole tune the nearest to 0db it can get meaning the US sound is generally 'bigger' even though much of the same equipment is used....cool article i think in SOS which showed the exent of compression and limiting used in dres production to get that huge sound...

nuthing wrong with doing all the mixing urself, its all about studying and practicing.

if u have a vision for how ur music should sound then develop ur sound, why pay some expensive engineer.

im on the independent tip so ima do my stuff gutter on some madvillain ish but cleaner though.

i thought i might raise this point.......

it has to do with the style of music to begin with. I mean, uk hiphop and us hiphop are differant.

When dudes hear the music, they might mix it according to thier interpetation of the music.

I always thought of UK hiphop as "underground" at least its quality....I dont think this equates to unproffessional....but a commercial USA hiphop track sort of avoids that underground sound, and brings a proffesional sound to it. Professional meaning, that it doesnt sound like it was made in a basement. Its real clear.....but then the arrangement sometimes calls for that type of mixing.

Where as when i make a soulfull east coast sample beat, i dont care about the vinyl hiss and crackle, and i choose bass and drum sounds that fit that category.

But if i where to make a nelly beat, i would use my triton, use clean sounds, and try to make my keyboard sounds not thin. I dont want to muddy up the bass, and i want an 808 ish sounding kick.

you know iwhen i was spinnin house music i notice that about the bass freq, and i always thought it was some thing the americans were not doing right cause the records here sounded more thump and the import records sounded more boooom boooooom the bass really carried on those records, i always thought it was the bass modules they used were more techincal then what they had here in the states,

but i'm being confused because some of you say that the engineers dont know how to mix , would that sound come from the equipment being used than the person mixing it, mixing is pretty much done the same way right thru a mix board and eqing. well if the equipment is different than what we have here wont that make a difference in how it would sound,

i always thought other countries were more head of us here in the states, in technology.
alls i know is that i want the bass that comes from Uk, that sh!t works your spearks.
yo penfold i'll trade you places you live here and i 'll live there...
that way you can get that sound your looking for.
peace

most of the hip hop, r&b and dance music here in the states seems too overcompressed for my taste. i know people want their discs to be "hot" and all, but theres a point where it just gets ridiculous. if you go a bit lighter on the compression, you'll save the dynamics to your sound and it will be more musical and less tiring to listen to the WHOLE LP (even with headphones). when you go overboard it just sounds like loud, claustrophobic top 40 FM excrement. SAVE THE MUSIC - RESTRICT COMPRESSION

The tracks u sent me, are they the ones in your soundclick....The reason I ask is be'coz my email didnt like the zip file u sent....Flagged up that their might have been a virus present (Hope u weren't trying to collapse my shizzle- lol)

The 'Could it be...' track is baaaaaaaad. Did you mix that yourself? Dont sound bad to me.... Levels sound good...Drums sound a little tinny tho. They could thump a little more, but bar that, its good to go man.....

The other track is BIG! Who are the female vocalist?

Dont think ur as off the mark as you make it sound (If you mixed them tracks that is)

Cool.....All tracks sound clean....Nice mixes. If anything, lack a little gloss/warmth but I spose that could be down to what you had access to when mixing down. Valve comp's usually help.....They usually help to bankrupt too

What label is all this stuff on....U produce aswell, or you just rap? (and mix - lol )
