mpd32 usb or midi out?

I have an mpc500 I've been playing with and I'm going pick up an mpd32.
I've tried using the mpc as a controller with a usb but it doesn't read. So for the mpd (which is meant to be used as a controller) will I need a usb or a midi cable?

if you want to control the 500 with the 32 you need to use midi.

If you want to control a software/plugin/DAW with an MPD32 you need a USB cable, wich comes with it.
