Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

Anyone notice that if you purge samples while the sequencers running you get a crazy PCM glitchy sound. Wondering if this is true for others. I'm not sure if its 100% of the time but its close. You end up with a single one shot sound that's bent as ****. Seemed to work better the more samples your purging, I think I found it restarting beats so I would purge 16 sounds or so. I don't know how much any of this effects the sound but I wanted to divulge every little bit I could.

I just sold my 2k last night or else I would post up some samples, recording that glitch was on my list of things todo with my 2000 before I sold it. Sadly it's the only one I forgot.

I'm also aware someone has probably (insert tapedeck, simon, or debauch here) found this before... Just want to know what other members have encountered. If someone finds it, please post an example. IIRC is was cooler noises than I've heard from any bent drum kit, more akin to what I hear when people make percussion on an arp or modular system. Not so much just PCM noise floor in other words.

Edit: this was found on an MPC2000 classic, The important part I remembered was to have notes entered in the sequencer, and have the sequencer running while you purge. I surmise if you sampled silence or silenced each pad you could hear/record a clean pass of the glitch with nothing in the background

honestly, I dont purge samples... I dont really have samples I dont use laying around in memory.. when I record a long one, I then use "make new sample" a bunch of times.. and in trim once I did that for all the parts I want I go and delete the long one. later on, if there is a sample I cut that I dont want I delete that too...

but that sounds cool.. too bad you didn't record it. sounds like something cool..

was the 2000 not doing it for you anymore? I saw you posted about selling it, and the price seemed not too bad.

I got the 2000 at a point when I was all about sampling or resampling everything. but now i realize how much i depend other methods than just sampling to make my tracks that it just didn't make sense to me to destructively sample everything into an mpc just to sequence. I was on the fence, but then tape deck showed be this program called "jeskola buzz" that I have absolutely fallen in love with. Seems to he the holy grail of electronic composition for me personally so I pulled the trigger and sold it. Was actually able to get above asking here locally.

Love using an mpc, learned a lot about my self using that machine. But ready to move on, take what I learned and apply it to something else in terms of music creation. Will say the experience I gained with swing/drums/composition from the mpc is invaluable. But just not "freeform" enough for me, as corny as that sounds.

On another note, I mentioned a list that i made of stuff todo on the mpc before I sold it. One of my favorite items was using the mpc as it was originally intended. To record individual drum hits through analog mixers/and mics. Wow that was fun, and a lot easier than I thought to get great sounding stuff. Recorded about 40 cymbals and snares in various rooms and dampening setups. Applied the 2000s AD envelope and it sounded like a classic drum kit 1:1.

it doesn't sound corny at all.. the stuff you are doing is progressing down a different path from what the mpc does... it makes perfect sense. I dont use the mpc for everything... even if it could be possible to do some of the more complex stuff theoretically... for some tasks there are better tools out there.

man - i am out of town away from the 2kxl but if you have found a way to reliably trigger this glitch - PROPS.
You end up with a single one shot sound that's bent as ****

are you saying it creates a new oneshot in ram? or alters existing ones?

i have encountered a crazy glitch a few times, generally when saving i think, where the mpc starts randomly going through the entirety of ram. its like this wash of digital noise and then every now and then a slightly 'bent' version of your actual samples. does amazing things with melodic phrases.

will definitely try this when i get back. thanks.

ps. funny cause i went buzz->mpc and barely looked back, you seem to be on the opposite

hey tapedeck, if you can snag a recording of either of those glitches.. I wouldn't mind hearing it... I will have to remember tomorrow to try out the purge one if I can figure out how to pull it off... haha.

It dosnt save any files or anything, it just plays as a one shot out of the stereo outs. It dosnt seem to use any information from ram to create the noise. i swear its generated by the mpc somehow, changing the samples in the ram dosnt change the sound at all. Sometimes I have done it and gotten roughly the same sound again and again, and then other times it changes dramatically. It's a really gritty short high pitch perc hit, that sounds like it has a crapload of FM modulation/distortion at different speeds. But it definitely triggered 90% of the time, i think the more your purging the better luck you have.

Lol my post was @ all the people I know who read the post and tried it and then got stoned and never posted the results. If you want to try it really quick just record 10-16 samples that are .1 seconds long of silence. You don't need data in the samples - the mpc generates the glitch devoid of Info in ram. None of what I said has to be followed exactly even, it was just how I stumbled upon it. I think the main part is purging while the sequencer is running. I must say tapedecks glitch seems to be something more useable in production, and more unique each time. While my glitch seems like a fun way to build a bent kit or two. That is if someone can trigger unique hits

I think I finally got it!! It was not during a sample purge, and sadly I was not recording the audio. I happened to be recording sequences with a lot of note repeat 32(3)s at 250BPM... the mpc freaked out and made the strange noise. I think it was the same you're describing because it wasn't like any version of my samples it was a newly generated noise. I'll be recording the sound next time.
