how do i set up a patch bay for my mpc 2000xl

So i have a mapc 2000xl with 8 0uts installed

i have a midi interface with 10ins and outs, or 5 stereo outputs

how can i set up a patchbay so that the interface is always plugged in and i can plug my mpc 8 outs in on the one side as needed

would like to organize studio cause all the cables are driving me nuts

Name the actual interface so we can add up how the 10 input total is arrived at. (It's usually 1/4"'s + SPID/F so the number is less if you need only 1/4"'s)

And what are you saying you want to buy a patch bay to help shuffle the 8 MPC outs more conveniently the (maybe less than 8 ) available interface inputs?

yeah basically that way i dont have to be plugging and unplugging wires all the time

i have the presonus firestudio mobile

has 8 1/4" and one rca jack

The 8 1/4"'s are a big plus there then. You could just get a basic patch bay and only have to swap 2-4 instead of all 8 all the time. (thinking one or two stereo pairs are what you'd want to have/leave open on the Presonus).

So yeah, you don't need a full mixer in that situation and patch bays are cheaper than mixers.

Not sure what you need the 10 midi-in-interface for. You should get an interface with at least 8 line ins. what i am hoping to do is using a focusrite scarlett 18i6 to record my eight outs. My problem is that the original IDE cable that was stuck to my s2000 motherboard is a bit to short to fit in my 2kxl. The board fits well. Sorry for copping the thread. But i think you are way off trying to record your 8 outs to a midi inteface.

^He wrote it wrong. He has 8 analog audio inputs on that unit. I had one but had to return it when all the PC's stopped having TI Firewire controllers. It jams 6 on the back on 2 on the front panel and the MIDI/SPDIF is on a breakout cable. I never saw more I/O in a smaller space ever.

But yeah off the typo your reply makes total sense.

The Focusrite you mentioned seems to be making a lot of people happy. I've seen six to ten guys on a FB music page i go to get one and they are all very happy with it.

Yeah that's totally doable. A patch bay is just a set of I/O to be used when a powered mixer is not necessary. Like you don't need pre-amps or 48v phantom power for mics and so on. You only need more ins and outs, exactly where you grab a patch bay.

Yeah basically, but on an interface that already has 8 inputs it's seems maybe not necessary. You still would need to pull out a pair to patch in a synth or sample an iPhone or TV set or whatever.

But yeah you have the general concept straight and have envisioned the wiring correctly.

its mainly so i can just install the patch bay rack mount style on my studio desk and have the interface plugged in all the time with the cable hidden behind a shelf

then i can patch in the mpcs outs as i need per project

i just hate cables everywehere it really kills my vibe in studio. i like things clean and efficient


all my synths are ran through ableton so wouldnt need much more and i have a little alesis 10 channel mixer for all my audio hookups

i e my dj set up, turntablees etc

Sounds like a good plan. I have my setup spread over three walls in backwards "U" arrangement and my OCD cable tubes and mounted holders can't cut it anymore. I have to just not look behind anything or the floor lest I go crazy, so I feel you.

With most patchbays, you'll set them up so that your standard setup is patched in to the rear of the unit without the need for any patch cables out front. Only when you want to change the patching do you use patch cables to divert the audio signals elsewhere. When you cop a patchbay there should be instructions on how it can be used effectively, these articles should make things clearer.

And a patchbay with some practical applications, slightly more advanced, for studios with lots of outboard gear (pre-amps, compressors, FX units, analogue mixing consoles, multi-track tape etc).
