s950... now what

copped an s950 sampler and its on its way... basically got it cause I had some available "toy funds".

heard it was the best for getting the cruchy grit/grim drums because of the 12bit recording..

but here's the question.


What the hell do I do with it? I got loads of sources for samples, mostly vinyl but how do I get them off record? From the looks of it, the s950 only has midi outlets.

do I hook the table up to the comp soundcard and then run the cables from the soundcard to the s950 and record that way?

once I have the sample recorded in the s950, what do I do with it from that point? its 12 bit so how do I load it up to my mpc or software sampler?

basically.. bought the shit on a whim and now trying to figure out what the hell to do with it.

Just jack into the front 1/4 inch with a mono plug from your mixer or source, and you ready to go. I believe it's mono only, which means if you have a stereo source, you gotta pan it all left, or you only sampling half the signal. Like most samplers, it does not amplify phonograph signal. You need a DJ mixer or turntable amp to do that. Then, you can go out of that into the sampler. If you wanna sample vynil to the computer first, that's cool, but it won't really help you with the 950, unless you would like to process it in the computer first, or to archive it. DO NOT hook the scsi port on the 950 up to your computer. It is for a standalone hardrive. Call akai for specs and compatability.

You could resample to the MPC if you want, but the 950 is better standalone. You got 8 outputs on that back of that thing, so now you got 16 total if you got the card on the MPC. I run my 950 like a sound module, sequenced by the MPC. That way, you get the sound of the output hardware. If you don't have a setup that will support both, then yes, you will have to play those samples out of the 950 into the MPC to resample them. Kinda defeats the purpose, I would use it the other way, with discreet outputs comming out the 950. You need to study up on the difference between midi and audio, or none of this will make sense.
But you now join the ranks of real hiphop cats. The 950 sounds great,
especially for filters.

It has midi ins, to sequence it with your MPC or computer. Get a video about the 950, it's strait foward, but a little weird in the interface. Making programs, etc can be annoying, but you'll get it. I'm not gonna try to explain that in a post. In '97, I copped the samplekings video, it's all good.

Why do people buy things without even knowing what they are? The S950 is a SAMPLER. It SAMPLES. I can dig that you had some cash spare and that it must be fun to pick up stuff on a whim but seriously, it seems like youve heard some hype and are just following along with it.

You can have some fun with the S900 and S950 for sure, but there are other "toys" id rather spend my money on in this day and age. In any case, enjoy
