This knowledge really opened up the possibilities on how to use the 4k better and some future expansion on where the 4k is headed.

The ASR-10 is old school but the methods and process it pretty much the same. Check it out for all the frustrated users reading the Akai 4k uninformative manuals.

You got to make up your mind where you want to be and where you want to go with your life. "Held down" by De La Soul ya.

The nearest friend of mine that uses an ASR-10 is in Detroit, MI, which is quite a ways from
Portand, OR. I See him about once a year, so I don't see myself near an ASR-10 anytime
soon.

Do you have any links to the manuals? I'm a big synthesizer manual reader, whether I own the synth or not. The knowledge is so easily applied to other synths, plus you never
know when you're going to get chance to be on another instrument, so might as well know
how to use it :)

My S-950 made it was that I was able to understand the KeyGroup part of the MPC 4000 very easily, so I'd like to see the ASR-10 manual as that is a more MPC type of equipment.

Cheers..

Thanks! Downloaded it and already see that what's added in OS 2.0 of ASR-10 software
is something that we are hoping for in MPC. Should be interesting come Mid-December.

Checked it out as well. Cool, it has sample streaming! And it's your choice to stream it to RAM or disk. Very nice.

I saw one in the shop yesterday. I had no idea it's OS was so advanced.

Besides the Sample Streaming of Ram or Harddisk
it also allows you to use the inputs to go through the Filters and Envelopes and FX.

Couple of other things that I found that is useful and will end up as RFE's to Akai from me
(I'm currently reading through MV-8000 manual and this ASR10 manual and making notes
of things that I want on the MPC, can't hurt to ask, and will just make their product that
much better).

pg 64
It gives one Macros for the hardrive
kind of like an alias so that one can get down into common locatins quickly.
a total of 28 macros can be saved

** This is great for having big 60G and 80G harddives on the MPC 4000

Pg 219 Envelope Templates

14 typical envelope templates

It has 14 preset Envelope Templates that cover some useful territory

** This is nice for being able to get up and running with a sound very quickly

-- It also has FX User Library settings, so that after one tweaks the FX and then
save the settings to be used again in different programs.

All useful stuff, will have to review the MPC User Inteface and see if these could be applied using Soft Key positions that aren't currently used. If so , i"ll be sending in some
more RFE's... :)

Clever! Both the macros and env templates sound very nice.
How old is the ASR-10? I always thought this thing was ancient, but I guess I'm wrong.

The were made through the 90's 92-97 I think, something like that.

And with 24bit FX and from what people on this forum say, very good FX.

Now I know why Trackmaster Lou beats on his so hard!

I don't think they are 24 bit FX. The FX unit is actually the same one in the DP-4 FX unit. The same FX are also in the ASR-X. When someone says the FX section sucks on a particular instrument I would think alot of times they were just complaining, or didn't know how to operate it properly. When I heard the DP-4 FX I knew why people complain. The FX really sound amazing! The best I have heard in a sampler.

So would it be worth getting an ASR-X just for the FX section?

"So would it be worth getting an ASR-X just for the FX section?"
No.

"in OS 2.0 of ASR-10 software"
Latest OS for ASR10 is 3.53.

"How old is the ASR-10? I always thought this thing was ancient",
92-97 timeframe is correct, it is ancient but it's good warm sound has
held it up for many years.

Yeah, the fx really are 24 bit. I used to own an Asr-x Pro, but I know for a fact that the fx are also 24 bit in the asr-10 as well as the Asr-x. And Rob, you can get an Asr-x or DP-4 parallel effects processor. They're both the exact same machine except the Asr-x has pads and a sequencer. The DP-4 might be a little cheaper and it is rackmount so it might be a little more convenient. The Asr-10 is a different machine alltogether, but similar in sound and effects, not exact.

isn't the ASR-X a sampler and the DP4 just an FX unit? The ASR-x is more than just a sequencer and pads, it has a sampler, which the DP4 doesn't have....you can also add expansion sound rom cards to the ASR-x. The sampling engine of the ASR-X is based on the ensoniq MR series sampler, while the ASR-10 was based on the EPS series sampler.

yhea the asr is a sampler and a kick ass one too, the seq is lame though and the interface is tedius but ok really, I rerget ever selling mine.. but just to correct MadT its based on the asr family not the eps and there never was a mr sample series from ensoniq just the mr. synth line, I have a dp4 now and it sounds amazing: warm & rich the asr would give you 2bus FX one with 3aux sends with hard settings for lo med hi sends (user editable) to the reverb section and one bus for anything. they sound brilliant I don't think there's even a sampler out toaday that can match the fx quiality of the asr.. with the DP4 you get 4indepentant busses, so if your only looking at fx DP is the way to go...

but I admit even with the mighty 4k here I still have wet dreams of the 5stage envelopes and the ultra fast resampling sratch pad system .. honestly a great little sampler and no call of bother with multis/program setups eather... yhea a great sampler it is ...
