Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

hello fellow mpc 200xl users,

New to the forum and to using an mpc. I recently picked up a mpc2000xl off of ebay, and upon receiving it found that the data wheel was busted. After searching through this very helpful forum i found out that it shouldn't be too much of a hassle to fix myself. so i bought a pot from mpcstuff.com and learned the art of soldering, and now i come to you for help.

So I have soldered and desoldered the pot twice now. Each time I do it I test it to make sure everything is fine by going into trim and then shift and f1 to test the pads and wheel, and it responds the perfectly. Then after soldering and reassemble after about a half hour of use the wheel will only go in one direction, the first time only down in values, the second only up in value. I was wondering if anyone knew what i was doing wrong or why it would behave this way. is possibly the pot??? Any help would be amazing.

I dont know.. but I had two pieces of electronic gear that did that type of thing too (one was a stereo volume control years ago) and they had 360 encoders too.. the problem in those cases were because they were dirty. I sprayed contact cleaner in them and it fixed the problem... even though they are not analog pots, it worked. I was getting jitter and then the value would fly all the way one way.. or not moving at all etc. But who knows if that is your problem though... huh.

its not a bad idea, but in my experience, desoldering really can mess things up.

if the problem keeps happening it is either in the encoder itself, or more likely since you've been in there so much, in these multiple soldering attempts maybe you have bridged a connection on the board. check for dirty solder joints or anything that could be shorting two connections.

i obviously dont want to keep soldering it but there werent any bridges after my first attempt. And after both soldering jobs the data wheel works fine, its only after some use that it stops working accordingly.

I meant.. in the encoder itself, maybe there is some dirt or dust that is **** with the read of how much you turn the knob or what direction...

I dont know honestly.. I dont know how that could happen with a brand new one.. but I had two electronic things where when turning the wheel it would jitter.. and then jump all the way to minimum or it would just sitter and not really go anywhere when I wanted it to.. I spritzed a bit of contact cleaner in the pot and turned it a bit and it was working after that...

for yor case though.. I dont know if that could be the issue?

you didn't **** up the part with the soldering iron did you?

nope the part is fine. and its not behaving erradictly either. It just stops reading one direction. like right now regardless of how i turn the the wheel it goes up, but it does so at the speed and intervals that you would expect. before when i first put it in regardless of how i turned the wheel it would go down.

well maybe two of the contacts are shorting so it only goes one direction.. and the other direction isn't working? check your soldering I guess.

alright so i desoldered the pot, hit the board with contact cleaner, resoldered the pot and hit it with more contact cleaner. Tested it and it is once again working the way it should be.

I am not going to use the unit until Monday to let everything sit for a bit just to be on the safe side. The last two times I dove right into it out of excitement. Heres hoping everything worked out well. Thanks for all the help.
