also leave space in the bass line sometime u dont need a bassline that takes up the whole track u might just do a few bass stabs

^^ jpeg is spot on here, bass is better left sparse for hip hop imo. just 2 or 3 easy rolling notes going into each other, dont be afraid to leave some space too.

if you're in the key of A and you go down half an octave, 4 whole steps, you'll be in the key of Eb. if you like tri-tones, you're home free.

cool thahks for that man, im gonna try it next time.

This is a nice example. Premier just dubbed a few notes. Nothing fancy here, but it's enough to give the track that low end. It's a nice warm dominant bass sound that just need to sit there on some places to be present.

Where I currently live my ability to find samples is very limited (Fly in only community of 500 people) so I am forced to rely on digital samples, no records. I got the multi sample pack and it has some alright bass in it.

Wondering if anyone can point me in a better place to find some solid bass lines/samples as I am really lacking in this area right now.

Thanks.

This is not exactly what you are looking for but I think you will find it a viable alternative.

You simply buy yourself a Boss DR880 drum machine. This drum machine is a bass player also. You can tweak the many bass sounds inside of it and it is laid out like the strings on a bass guitar. One press of a button takes you up or down an octave.

I can play the bass, and this little box is the easiest way to play bass guitar other than getting an expensive tap stick bass. You will find yourself making very creative bass lines very easily and very quickly with the DR880. It can also be a midi controller for the bass sounds in another midi enabled machine or DAW.

Cheers,
Ian.

also try the low end theory. where you take you original sample, double it, then on the doubled one filter out the highs and then layer it under the original sample.

Am I missing something? Couldn't you just turn the volume up x 2.00 on one sample and lo pass it?

Doing it Damien's way means you still retain all the bass tone and frequencies but with added bottom so, to me, his way would sound better than yours.

a 3db lp filter would do the same thing. Doubling audio just 2 x the amplitude. So anything you could do by doubling you could by also do by turning up the volume and shaping with an EQ for the same results... using an EQ would also allow you to dial in resonance and isnt dependant on a sample accurate enviorment if your doing it ITB.

you know, ive wondered that too, but its how all those old school sample heads did it, so ive never really questioned it too hard.

although, if you put a slight distortion or something to change the sound further, this method gives wayy more flexibility and wouldnt any longer be just doubling the volume.

yeah then your busting out some parallel action, would be very worthwhile that way. if you followed the "low end theory" method and incorporated some parallel compression on the filtered audio youd probably get some fat results.

yup :-D
