Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

I found a local dealer that is selling an MPC 2000, but the "pitch fader" is unresponsive. I've never owned an MPC, so I'm unfamiliar with the parts names, but Google can't find anything with a similar name. Anybody care to describe what this part is and whether or not it's cheap/expensive to fix? Thank you.

its not really a 'pitch fader' - though it can be used for tuning.

i believe the proper term is 'note variation slider'

technically it is a slide potentiometer, so if you could find one with the same dimensions and resistance values, you could save a few bucks by ordering from a electronics distributor like mouser.

Alright the guy had called it that, I just wasn't sure what the real name was. That guide should help, & the thing's only 15$. If I'm a heavy sampler I'll need this thing badly right? What exactly is it's function? & can I assign the functions of it to my MIDI controller keyboard instead?

Do this! You are so in luck if the price is adjusted at all by the broken NV slider. Broken NV slider is nothing compared to other things that can go wrong

Personally, I wouldn't miss it too much considering the fact you can always use the '16 levels' feature to access any of the Note Variation controls.
What exactly is it's function?

it can be used to make changes on tuning, decay, filter frequency, (and I think attack?), it can only use it on one pad at a time. I think the original intent was to help simulate open/closed hi hat.
& can I assign the functions of it to my MIDI controller keyboard instead?

external MIDI signals can be used to control the NV slider. but the NV slider can't send outgoing MIDI signals. (The wording in the manual is ambiguous so I thought you might like to know that.)

Alright sick! Thank you! So this thing does not control the pitch/speed of samples? Just want to clarify that one feature so I know I can buy this.

It might not be broken, it is possible that the seller doesn't know it has to be assigned to a particular pad and function before it will do anything?

All the functions you'll need to PROGRAM a beat doesn't really require the slider. The slider is a good tool to use when you play live.
On the 2000xl the slider can also be used to set the start and endpoint of a sample (an alternative method to the jog wheel) but that function is XL only.

check the display for black or blank lines . If the display don't show them -> buy the 2000.

Sorta, it can control pitch but its nothing like the pitch wheel on a keyboard. It's hard to explain without playing with it first. You could use the NVslider to get different pitches from a tom sample, but it is not possible to use the nv slider to add vibrato or string bend effects to a sample.

So if I wanted to change the pitch/tempo of a sample it wouldn't require this slider?

I just asked, but he appears to have used it for a minute now so I think it's really broken.

It's a bid on ebay so it's constantly going up. He just relisted it (although someone had won it?) so I guess I get another chance. It sold for 202$ last time, but like I said for some reason it didn't go to the bidder.

the pitch slider, when set to tuning, will change the pitch of sample before it is triggered.

you cannot change the pitch while the sample is playing - it will just play at the new pitch next time you trigger the sample.

you don't *need* it - as many people have said, it is handy but it is not necessary. you can do all functions that it does in other ways.

The note variation slider will also not do anything, unless you go into the assign screen and assign a parameter and pad for it to affect, otherwise moving it does nothing.

Alright thank you that's exactly what I was wondering!

I don't have a manual yet, was planning on buying the MPC first. Easier to learn it hand's on.

If a 2000, not 2000XL, is there a manual available online anywhere?

http://www.mpc-tutor.com/files/mpc-manual/MPC2000_Manual.zip

I have to +1 tape and Peter on not really needing the slider. I don't think I ever used mine. But Simon is right either way it will be cheap and easy to fix

Okay thanks, I'll check that manual out when I get the MPC.
