Bug reports & end-user support for Akai's MPC Software 'controllers' including the new MPC Studio 2, the MPC Touch, MPC Renaissance & original MPC Studio and MPC StudioB lack.

Here's another "fear" for you. The problem with the Ren and Maschine as far as longevity goes is how long is the PC going to be around? Intel already has a roadmap of when they will be out of the "desktop" cpu market. PC sales are down, Dell's gone private, devices with little or no real computing power are the rage. Had Steve Jobs lived you could make a pretty safe bet that the demise PCs would have been on much more accelerated track. Kinda makes you wonder why Akai who had the corner on the embedded operating system/hardware market would go down the PC road so late in the game.

Very true that's all I been hearing lately. But it is the year 2013 and as always with technology everything shrinks and gets less expensive to make there fore history will probably repeat itself
And if akai sticks around long enough I can see them releasing another MPC-60 like machine
stand alone with everything you need running inside of it but upgradable and with the option ala MV-8000-8800 to use a monitor and mouse (I know I'm dreaming but that would be a true MPC for the now times IMO)

This is true, and I agree. But what's also true is the fact that I can load and run a windows98 program on my machine with no problem. Even if it they started trashing desktops today it would take decades to phase out completely just like it took decades to phase in. it will be a very very long time before what we are using today is completely unsupported. Akai isn't a utopian society of musicians and engineers, they chose to go the computer route because its cheaper and competes directly with there biggest adversary. Which sucks, but its easier acknowledge then to pretend they are super homies of musicians everywhere.

I fear an Alien space ship sucking all the air from the planet and we all suffocate. This is why I always wear a space suit.

Seriously Op - have no fear. Get the thing and make tunes.

Does 1.3.1 solved the 'steppy' cutoff (there was some video on youtube) when using the qlinks to tweak the filter cutoff?

Is it now possible to create seamless filter sweeps (besides using Model1 which crackles even when tuning with the mouse)?

first of all i really wanna thank everybody for contributing to this post, secondly i have made up my mind on waiting, the funny thing is that what helped me most was a response on another topic

es-k wrote:And if they're gonna put up a blatant lie on the Ren's box like "use with computer screen or pretend its not even there!" then at least make sure they can live up to it by hiring more developers, or doing it right in the first place. There's just no way that the handful of devs working on the Ren will be able to compete with Maschine, which has the largest development team at NI (even all the Kore devs are now part of Maschine's team). The way Jack O'Donell is though, he's never going to allow investing more in the Ren's dev team unless it's flying off the shelves. So it's far more likely that it will be replaced by a Ren XL or whatever before the Ren ever becomes the product they hyped it up to be.

there are other people also who think that ren might be an experiment abandoned when it succeeds for the sake of a new product ren 2 or ren xl.so i guess i will stick to my cubase for now.

i always thought that ren is a great idea, i loved my workflow with my previous mpcs but was always broken between my mpc and then transfering channels to my cubase for extra editing and mixing and recording voices.

unfortunately there is not a product which will take me to next step, ren potentially is but as you guys told here its gonna take a long time, maybe more than a year, before it succeeds and i don't wanna be left a step back when it does and then try to find to sell somewhere ren for half of the money i payed at best occasion to get the next akai big thing.

i am not an akai fanboy, i have learned to make music with mpcs and cubase and right now i work too many hours to be experimenting with other stuff like maschine, not that i ever liked it anyways, looks so cheap.

off course a standalone mpc with connectivity like ren was should be out back when roland was releasing mvs 8000 and 8800 but it didn't and now i think that although some people are right complaining about ren not being a standalone, due to economical crisis it is a really good solution, otherwise it would cost at least double the money it does now.

again damn the economical crisis cause i would have bought one with no second thought if i had a chance to make some money.i live in greece and work just for paying my bills and feeding my child.so i guess that buying an mpc is a very good option for someone who can spare extra 1000 euros each year but that's not my case.

Dont buy the product if it cannot meet your current needs. All this stuff has been discussed so many times here, quite frankly threads like this pop up almost every day. Do you have a specific question that you couldn't find the answer to?

thank you for recycling a recycled answer in a recycled topic, as you say, jah. the conversation has gone a long way through since when clint answered.anyway i was expecting more of analysis from an mpc fanatic like you.

What I get from the 'conversation' is that you are looking for forum members to sell you on the Ren. It appears the only members that responded are non-Ren owners. However, as an actual Ren user, I really can't give you a different perspective than what is written above. This is why I co-signed it. I am willing to answer any specific questions you have though.

thanks for the offer. i will take advantage of it.
ok here are some quick questions for ren.

1)can you work on ren with confidence that now that you know the bugs you can avoid them 100% and complete a beat?
2)how many times have you lost a beat from a crushing??
3)do you use the undo button and redo, is it really as bad as they say??
4)how many times through making a beat you have to switch from ren to pc, from hardware to mouse??
5)from the updates and the way they are improving ren till now how many updates you think will take to make the mpc ren undoubtedly better than any other mpc (and rock solid)?
6)is the screen lagging too much?? in which proccess would you see this problem more (mean when mixing?? hitting the pads??).
7)would a bigger screen with more options on it (like mpc 4000) be better for your workflow?
8)my pc is 3.4 ghz intel core i5 with 3 giga ram, is it good enough for ren???
9)what has ren, in comparison to previous mpcs, gave you a crucial advantage using it and stepped up your beat making.
10)do step edit and grind options work like previous mpcs?
11)finally they all say that hardware is build like a tank, can you compare it a little with mpc 4000 and mpc 2500?

thanks in advance :)

p.s. a stupid question for ending is ren pure white like mpc 2500se or mpc 4000 or closer to grey, some pics had me confused.

JAH says "It appears the only members that responded are non-Ren owners."

Jah I'm actually a fan of yours I usually find your responses on point and informative but sometimes you do assume things that aren't exactly true. Thats the great thing about the Internet you never really know who you're talking to or who may be listening! I am an Ren owner and just in case you're interested in listening to what I'm able to do with the Ren you can check out my work here:

https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/one/id563181956?uo=4"%20target="itunes_store">One%20-%20Smashbox%20Symphony

All the drums and keyboards were done on the Ren. Yup it is a little different musical genre than most of folks here are making but the Ren is my goto box both live and in the studio along with a S6000 but that's another story....

1. With 1.3, I can complete a beat and not worry about it crashing. However, you will have different experiences depending on which plugin instruments you use.

2. This goes back to question #1. I don't get any crashes through normal use of the Ren. However, if I am doing things to intentionally try to crash it (stress testing) that is a different story.

3. The Undo/Redo is flaky. I won't sugar coat it. I don't use it at all. I personally feel that it should be simplified and only tied into the sequencer. Every single knob turn can be undone/redone which I really dislike. It should also have a way to let you know what exactly will be undone/redone. Until this is address, I will not use this function when making a beat.

4. I do it all the time. Somethings are faster from the hardware and somethings are faster using the software. I use what is best to fit my workflow. I am not one of those obsessed with every single function needing to be assessed from the hardware. But, I acknowledge that some users want this so I fully support this request.

5. I whole-heartedly believe the software for the Ren is better than any MPC ever created as of 1.3. The hardware of the Ren is pretty good but not the best. I don't necessarily care for the height of the buttons. While they are acceptable, they are certainly unlike the hardware MPCs I have spent $2500-$3500 in the past. Considering the complete package...if I only could choose 1 MPC...the Ren would be at the top of the list. I rarely use my hardware MPCs outside of testing and verifying functions while working on the Ren. Will I ever sell my hardware MPCs? Probably yes...with the exception of my MPC 3000LE, the best built MPC ever made.

6. In general, I have no issues with any lag in the LCD especially when using the data dial and cursor buttons. Depending on certain parameters such as routing of pads to outputs, you will experience some issues when turning the Qlinks too fast; this isn't an issue with the data dial.

7. If I were Akai, I would have went with a larger LCD screen. It would have given them more freedom to design the menus on the LCD. Akai some-what used the concept of the MPC 5000s synth editing via qlinks and brought it to the MPC Ren with a much smaller screen. It has mixed results in my opinion. But I have no suggestions to make it better as the LCD is tied to the Qlinks which seems users like. If they designed it to mimic hardware MPCs, there would be a lot of clicking using the cursor buttons which isn't better.

8. Those specs are good enough for the Ren. But if you use too many plugins, you will run out of memory as it is a 32 bit app.

9. It's faster and more powerful. Sample Editing in the Ren crushes what you can do on a hardware MPC.

10. No. One of my biggest feature requests is to have Step Edit (MIDI event list editor) and Grid Edit (as seen in the MPC 1000, 2500, 4000, and 5000) return to the Ren. Many MPC users have grown to love these functions. Personally, I use Step Edit a lot in hardware MPCs.

11. I kind of answered this above. No, the Ren is not built like an MPC 4000. It does have better pads and a data dial. It is similar in build to the MPC 2500. As I mentioned above, I would go for an MPC Ren XL. I would add a larger, color LCD. I would expand the audio I/O, and give it internal drives (CF card and SSD).

In the context of this thread, what I said was true. I can name all the forum members that have posted in this thread that don't own the Ren. But I am sure you can easily find this information yourself if you choose. There are at least 4 forum members that have responded that have never claimed to have purchased the Ren.
