Exchange tips and tricks for the Akai MPC4000

I rarely post but I wanted to say much thanks to all who post excellent information here. I had a 2500 and had a love/hate thing with it even with the jj os. I've always heard about the 4000 so I did a ton of research and finally found one for a good price.

It has the efx card, the adat out card, 8 outs, cd drive, 512 ram, and 160gb hard drive.
The first thing I did was take it apart to really inspect it. Pretty good condition and after some cleaning here and there, I added some fat pads, and blacked it out. Thanks again to all for the tips. It's a world of difference in terms of functionality which I love. Been breezing around in it for a few hours and I'm thoroughly pleased.

could you please tell more?
how did you do this?

thanks!

It was all cosmetic. I got the black button kit and a black skin from mpcstuff and installed it. It was pretty straight forward as I did it while I had it opened. Honestly, it was just to match everything else better as I'm not a fan of the blue and white or blue look that comes standard.

The 4000 definitely has more features of course and it's more easily accessible due to dedicated function buttons. On the 2500 you have to hit mode then whatever pad. The feature set is deeper on the 4000 and that's including jj os.

The feature set is way more extensive on the 4k. There are 4 efx sends vs 2 on the 2.5k. On the 2.5k you access the efx sends through the program mode. On the 4k you simply hit the effects button. More control over what you're doing to include the key grouping on the 4k that's not on the 2.5k. Again, the separate buttons mean deeper editing.

The first thing that I really noticed was the recording screens. On the 2500 you can actually see the notes running in real time. On the 4000 you just kind of have to know it's there and go into the grid or step edit to see them.

The 4000 screen is bigger of course so there's more information in front of you. Especially in terms of midi control which is huge for me as I have 4 keyboards and 4 sound modules. The 2500 does the same thing but the information is right there on the 4k.

The adat out option was a huge plus on the 4k. I recently switched from an Ensemble to an Apollo so now I can literally run 16 tracks in at time. Big time saver.

Now on to one of my favorite functions so far that I happened to just turn a knob and find. There is real time swing adjustment on the 4k at least while it's playing. You simply adjust on the fly. On the 2.5k you adjust it, hit enter, and a screen pops up and tells you are sure because you can't go back. Basically, I would copy the sequence in the 2.5k and try out different settings. Yes, you can record with swing on in both but to adjust while playing in real time is huge.

I've read a lot of people who say the 4k is too much for them. I can see where it could be for some. For someone like myself who's a hardware guy with a bunch of other things connected it's the way to go. The learning curve was not severe on my end because I pretty much knew the 2.5k in and out.

These things are not a knock on the 2.5k. It's just that the 4k does so much more. The things they both do are fairly simple processes on the 4k. Something like finding efx through the program mode on the 2.5 vs a button on the 4k. Little differences that just make the whole process easier. I see now how people can sit in front of their 4k for hours.

sorry, but the most outputs you can run from the mpc4000 is ten.
The adat option and the 8 outs will work concurrently, however they mirror each other.

I should've clarified what I meant. I can run the 8 outs using the adat on the 4k while using the 8 audio ins on the Apollo to run my other gear through. That's what I meant by the 16 track count. My audio ins on the Apollo are now free.

A few more updates now that I'm back in town. The 2.5k has an input thru. It may not be a big deal for some but for anyone wanting to run a live instrument through it then it is a plus. I sometimes run my bass through it and use it to practice to various tracks without having to fire a room full of equipment up. The 4k does not have this feature.

The next bummer is something I discovered today. I now know why the aksys is dreaded. On the 2.5k when you connect to your computer via usb you go through the load or save menus (your choice), hit the usb tab, select mount and you can basically transfer files from your mpc drive to a computer drive. On the 4k I ended up having to go through Parallels on my Mac to access Windows. Fortunately, I kept Vista on there and after about 4 tries I could finally load aksys 2.53 I think it is. I tried the Mac version from Akai's site with no luck.

My real problem is how slow the transfer is. I had about 71gb's on my2.5k hard drive. Basically, I ended up transferring the files from there to the computer. Yes, I could've just swapped out the drives but I haven't backed up the 2.5k in about a year so it was time. Glad I did to be honest. I read on here from either Lamp or Clint who said they basically keep the transfer to under 100mb at one time. Obviously, there are workarounds but it's a big difference to hook up the 2.5k and basically copy an entire drive vs on the 4k where the aksys is limiting. I even ended up with the 15 error code everyone mentioned. However, shutting down the program and restarting it worked fine after 2 times.

Terminology is different as well. It does do some good to read the manual to make yourself familiar with the language. I know it's like a dead horse around here but reading a manual when learning new equipment should be done to at least know the terminology.

Size is another area that should be considered. The 4k is huge! If portability is your concern the 2.5k wins. If functionality is what you're after the 4k is in another league. Again, thanks for all the info on here because it did help. I did my research first so I knew the areas that may be a problem. Between the manual and the people here I was able to be up and running in minutes on this thing.
