Not to be formulaic with my production techniques, but I'm trying to develop more of a routine. I'm hoping a consistent approach will help make me become more focused. Step 3 is where I have some questions and want to hear your input on best practices.
Current steps
Stage 1: Create improvised sequences with my MPC sent out to my synths and drum machines (no major sampling at this stage). Tweak and experiment with the knobs on the synth and drum machines in a techno style.
Stage 2: Now with the sequences running I turn my attention to my old school analog mixer. EQ my different instruments and start freaking my mixer in attempt to sound like King Tubby or some other dub reggae guy.
Step 3: Now here is some questions. Can my MPC record the stereo output of my mixer while the MPC's sequence is running? (I apologize I don't just test it out myself, but unfortunately I won't have my MPC around for the next few days). If possible, would there be any reason this could degrade the audio quality?
Step 4: Now that I have a raw drawn out performance recorded to my MPC, I could extract the quality bits and chop them up into different beats. Finally bang away at the MPC in a hip hop style. Save the MPC performance as a finished song.
In terms of audio quality does this process sound questionable? Alternatively for step 3 I could record the stereo output from my mixer into my computer. However i'm not sure about the quality of my M-Audio Audiophile's A/D converters, it was a pretty cheap unit. Besides, with this method I would conceivably have to run two separate A/D conversions, first going into my computer and second coming out of my computer to be recorded into the MPC. Obviously it would be preferable just to record straight into the MPC.
Any thoughts?
