Reason 7 Announced

I tried researching figures for the last few minutes and its kind of all over the place. Ableton seems to be earning more money (in the last few years) but Propellerheads website seems to have more users on the forums. I based my opinion off the fact that in my wealings and dealings ive ran into alot more ableton users than reason users. However to be fair I really dont know how many of the ableton users i "ran into" could be classified as a userbase.

What I was initally trying to point out, is that yes Propellerhead is a big company with a large user base. But its exactly like you said Clint most people dont use it at their main software they rewire it, and I think Reason 7 is a step twoards trying to get people to use Reason only and add things from Logic/Pro tools/Ableton/VSTs to become a complete system and hopefully get people to dump what they rewire with.

I love Reason. When I first tried Ableton several incarnations ago I coulldnt get into it. Maybe because it was being marketed as ideal for loop-based music. Now I understand that tracked out MPC sequences work well in Live.

Is this new Reason universal binary or Intel only for us Mac users? My dear old G5 is trapped with Logic Pro 8 and Pro Tools 8, Reason 4 is on there too. It's only used for music, not really wanting to replace it until it dies. Have a MacBook Pro on hand too which only has Reason 5 installed at the moment.

to be fair... ableton live lite came with a lot of products.. keyboards, controllers... etc. I dont know if or what reason light versions came with if anything at all.... so sure, ableton probably was introduced to many people that way...

In one of their recent conferences Ableton announced that they had 1.2 million registered users.

...and I remember Create Digital Music saying exactly what Debauch did about the number getting swelled off the ubiquitous Lite versions. (hell, I gave away 2 just on this forum..)

But seriously if you remember how niche this stuff actually is, even hobbyist and professionals combined, 500k to a million people using your $400-$1000 products is being wildly successful.

Probably my 2 favorite computer apps ever, and Recycle is right there too.

When I say big guys, I mean industry standard. Reason has been around for a while but is not a commonly accepted industry standard for audio production. I have yet to walk into a proffesional studio where reason is whats running on the computer. Your preaching to the choir man, Ive been arguing against the "reason is a toy" crap for years. But Come on are you seriously saying that having the spectral EQ and integrating recycle isnt a ploy to go more toe to toe with someone like ableton? who yes does have a much larger user base... bigger market share = bigger "guy" IMHO.

i could argue for days on this..lol..industry standard is a term ive always laughed at..at school we had reason, live, protools and logic,. i noticed most of the younger crowd used live..i did all my assignments in reason, even the ones i was sposto do with live, the teacher knew no different when i turned in the wav file..lol..but reason just recently added audio tracks with in the past few years.. back in the day they use to give out cubasis with computer hardware gear and i use to rewire it with reason for my audio in, the two worked perfect together, now they give out live lite., i learned live, and used it at school, even made some sicKK tracks with it, but i just cant bring myself to like it..ive been using reason for far too long.. but i gotta say, around reason2.0 time when i was living in nashville i knew 2 guys that made their living with reason, 2 guitar players, and they would sell their tracks to pay rent and bills... i think if you have been in the game since 98', you have one of the most stable daws out there, and you do things on ur terms, that makes you a big guy but u know, ive never **** with protools, never even tried to use it,. ive also never heard the term "reason is a toy" from people in decent size studios, only seen that from a few people around here and other lil trolls around the internet.. i always laugh a lil inside when people tell me they use fruity loops for their tracks, cause i remember what it was when it first started back in the day, now it did look like a toy, but now its crazy how far its come i feel like they are a big guy too, cause they have been around for long enough and put in their time just my 2 cents

Fruity Loops is apparently the most widely used DAW in the world, so it could justifiably be described as THE 'industry standard'.

You seem be responding to a different argument. I didn't say reason isn't a powerhouse DAW, hell I'm litterally using at I type this. But you are thoroughly confused if you think reason has been on the cutting edge of mixing/mastering.

For the record though, making my own tracks. Reason sounds better than any other daw IMHO

I admit I kind of blurred the line in my post between "standard" and "most popular" two very different things

Well major studios probably weren't using reason because of recording audio tracks etc... They need that so...

But if someone is making beats at the studio they probably would have it.


As for fl studio, I dont know about industry standard and what that means... (aside from .wav files, the midi protocol, stuff like that) ... but I am guessing fl studio is probably close to being the most downloaded/tried out daw... They get like 30k+ downloads a month or something. When that first came out it was a midi 16 step sequencer that had 4 channels and could control external gear.. I believe that is the only thing you could do with it. Fruity tracks was a bit better (the version 2) and when fl3 came out it was very powerful but easy to use... now with today's versions.. it's entirely different. I mean at the end of the day it's a sequencer for vst pluggins, samples, and audio... right? But I like the pattern method of making music... it's similar to making songs on an mpc sort of...


I think cubase is one of the older ones that is still around...

I am a long time Reason owner and I like this update. Idk if I will upgrade as these features aren't all that important to how I work since I don't use Reason by itself but I still like the update.
