Reaper Recording MIDI from MPC

Hey Guys,

I'm having some trouble getting my MIDI data recorded into Reaper. I've been looking all over the reaper forums and the mpc-forums but with no luck.

I have my MPC 2500SE connected to my computer via the M-Audio Fast Track C-400 interface. The device is enabled and when I press pads, there is proper sound coming out of the VST into my monitors. I'm also able to control Reaper (to a small extent) using the MPC controls (play, stop play start, etc)

What I'm unable to do is actually have midi data recorded into a MIDI track for playback (Reaper is the slave). The record button on my MPC essentially does nothing. Even pressing record in Reaper pops up a window waiting for the Timecode.

I've recently found that I can record by starting everything with the MPC, then when Reaper starts running press the record button from within Reaper. Is this the intended behaviour (IE the MPC cannot directly tell Reaper to start recording, even when slave)?

Settings:
Enable input from this device (checked)
Enable input for control Messages (checked)
Enable synchronization to time code (checked)

I have a single track added, set to channel 1 (MPC track one is set as a midi track, 1A)

Monitor Input (checked)
Record Input (audio or midi) (checked)
input MIDI

What I can see happen is the MPC starts playing, with the reaper kicking in after a few seconds delay. After the first few seconds any pad I hit will emit a noise, but will not be stored in the midi item in the track.

Any remote ideas? I feel like I'm missing something small.

I realized shortly after this post that the method that I wanted to use to track out to Reaper wouldn't work anyway.

I only have a 2 channel analog audio interface device, so I was planning on just making passes through each track one at a time to get them all in.

So I was essentially trying to do too many things at once. Record onto the MPC and into Reaper at the same time while forgetting that I needed to make multiple passes anyway :p the whole trying to record it live wouldn't work.

Just need to record the full sequence with track mutes, set a single track out into my interface, hit play on the MPC and record in reaper.

trying to work out what your asking, but if you want to record mutliple midi tracks INTO reaper - and then have REAPER play samples from your MPC it does work.......

You need to open a track, at this stage an audio track is fine.

Open up i/o on the Track.

this is where you want to select the midi send to track 1 (via your interface), and midi input from track 1 (if track 1 in mpc) also via interface.

once this is done, insert a new track, repeat process until you have 16 tracks in your daw.

Now just make sure all your tracks in your mpc correspond to the matching tracks in reaper and .........

before you hit play, if your recording midi - what you want to do is slave reaper to the mpc (left click play button, MTC sync all channels)

BUT

after you record your midi - take the sync off. If you have midi in reaper and are then sending signals to your mpc - Reaper is now the MASTER, cos no matter what you do to your mpc (change tempo ect) reaper is always going to play those midi messages back how they are in time in Reaper...........

The root issue was that Reaper wasn't going into "record" mode when I hit record on my MPC.

But I can work around it. I need an empty bar to clear the sync between the devices...so I can just hit record in Reaper during.

Edit: I mentioned not using MIDI when I was at one point.

yeh, that's not possible.

you can play from MPC which will in turn force reaper to play / record, but not the other way around ( as far as i know).

I did Reaper get FL to do this, but i had to manually arm the daw and then use the record function with a pre-count the same as my daw.......even then there were timing differences....and i always had to have the DAW slaved to my MPC

If im recording 4 bar loops or 8 bar loops off the MPC into Reaper, i will always record twice the measure (so if i have 4 bars on MPC, i record 8 bars in reaper) as reaper will always take your first bar due to syncing.

Now, are you programming the midi data into the MPC and just want to record it and play back by using the MPC as a sound module?

Like i said though, once Reaper is armed (and the red box is flashing as you said) you only need to hit PLAY on the MPC......

If your recording your midi into the MPC first just use it that way.

Is it possible to record envelope automations in reaper using the mpcs faders through midi?

ME AGAIN,

you know how to set up the automation track in reaper i take it, so what you want to do now is enable the mpc as a midi controller.

try using the "CC" option inside the MPC in the Q- link section.........

In reaper, Click on the FX button on a track that you are working on. Select Add FX. Click on JS below All Plugins in the FX hierarchy. Filter for MIDI to search for Midi CC Mapper. That will do what you want (map CC messages to your plug-in). Make sure its before the plugin in the FX chain. Make sure Enable Input for Control Messages is selected.

It defaults to CC 1 automatically and CC 1 is Mod Wheel in Reaper by default as it follows the midi standard, might just need to change the CC value in the MPC so it says the same.

You also need to make sure the MPC is enabled as a MIDI device
