I'm just trying to come up with ways of playing a set with nice transitions in my electronic music. I am using internal samples and sequencing external gear. Just looking for creative workarounds that people have come up with. A simple one that I can think of is just copy a pattern you were using on a previous bar, paste it in a transition sequence, and then have a third sequence where you drop the original pattern out.

The problem is that I have a handful of "songs" without using song mode. If I do a live set, I would somewhat like to keep this spontaneous so I can go between songs at will/play some parts longer if the crowd is into it/etc.

That's another good little pointer. In a lot of my songs I keep it at 4/4 with snare on 2 and 4 aside from one song where I have a 3/4 time waltz.

I have an external drum machine as well, so sometimes I will change the beat on that, but keep the other one going *usually* for a *smooth* transition.

Hey Dajaphonics,

for years I did live sets using the second drum machine (with mpc 2000xl) - actually an200 so it had some drums and step pattern synth sequences ...

this made for great transitions..

Although now I plan to explore the simul pattern feature of os 128xl .. and the simul sequence feature of os2xl .. (I'm not sure which I will use for live.. I have both but os2xl looks like it might be better for live tech sets) .. If that fails I will go back to the second machine for transitions ... (though probably not using the an-200 for drums anymore as I scored an ry-30)

I definitely never have and never would use song mode for live playing - I always used track muting using the pads and progressed the music live... os128 does pad and track muting which looks like it may provide better options ... (alternate kick and snare tracks for a start)... I may even start to do a bit of finger drumming live if my skills get up high enough...

cheers

Allan
