Cubase project file backup

My PC recently caught a virus and it's been sent to a computer megastore for virus removal. It's possible that they might have to backup my important data (namely, Cubase 5 .cpr project files), remove the currrent O.S. (Windows XP SP3) and install Windows 7 Professional 64 bit.

I was told I would have to reinstall Cubase 5 if the new O.S. was installed. My main question is, how will this affect my existing Cubase projects? Also, will I have any issues with my USB e-Licenser? (I have Cubase 5 and Arturia V Collection 3 stored on my USB e-Licenser).

Will the switch from a 32 bit to 64 bit O.S. affect my existing Cubase projects?

Finally, is there anything else I should be aware of during this virus removal and backup process?

I've got old projects from Cubase SX1 that still load perfectly in Cubase 6. Steinberg are pretty good when it comes to backward compatibility.

The 32/64 bit OS won't cause any issues, and hopefully the dongle will still work ok.

Just keep all your projects backed up away from the computer in future. It doesn't sound like you're doing that at the moment.

You're right Coz, I wasn't backing up my chit...

Just got some great advice from someone on the Steinberg Forum, who says I should get some imaging software and make an image of my entire O.S. and program file contents, so I have a backup image at all times, in addition to having an external hard drive with all my song projects backed up. He also added that I shouldn't browse the internet or download .rar files on my music computer.

Duh! Things I knew but didn't act on, and now I'm paying the price.

I think the USB eLicenser (dongle), the physical USB drive itself, will still work, but won't the software drivers that came with it get lost unless I back them up?

Remember, my O.S. (Windows XP) is getting wiped clean, and a fresh version of Windows 7 Pro 64 bit is getting installed.

I need to know what to tell the computer technician to backup... and I'm thinking backing up the Syncrosoft eLicenser is just as important as backing up my Cubase project files.

Not sure if he can back up an actual program like that though. I think they can only back up files.

If anyone has some experience with this let me know.

I tried to fix it myself, but couldn't. The tech will probably have to slave the hard disk drive to another computer, and enter Safe Mode from there. Something I wasn't prepared to do myself.
