Here is the RIGHT way to use an MPC and ASR together...

This didn't work for me. I'm trying to get my MPC 60 Mk1 working with my ASR-10R.

One part of the original post that confused me was this: "1. MAIN SCREEN>> move cursor to highlight drum1... scroll to MIDI.. press open window.... IGNORE ALL SETTINGS.. press f2... (MONITR)... IF YOU FOLLOWED INSTRUCTIONS, YOU WILL SEE MIDI 1, channel 1 blinking when you play keys on your ASR."

^The MPC 60, from what I can gather, doesn't have an open window button or f2. Where should I see a blinking light? I can't play keys because I have an ASR rack version and don't have a midi keyboard at the moment.

I followed the other instructions...

MPC midi out to ASR midi in

on the MPC:
Type: MIDI
Channel: 1A-Synth01A & off

on the ASR:
Multi-In Mode: Multi
my OS automatically assigns each track to its own multi-in channel.

I still can't get my ASR sounds to play when I hit the pads on my MPC. Did I miss a step?

I have two midi cables that are basically brand new. I tried both.

What could I be doing wrong? Any ideas? Questions?

Is assigning MIDI notes a factor here as far as getting the pads to play ASR sounds?

Could someone who specifically uses the MPC 60 break it down for me? I noticed other people's questions haven't been answered, so I know this is a shot in the dark.

Which OS does your MPC60 have? This *could* make a difference at some stage. And did you correctly map the MPC pads into chromatic order to trigger consecutive notes on the ASR10? It shouldn't be too hard to trigger notes (even random notes) if your basic settings are in place.

With the MPC60 you'd really want the 3.10 OS do accomplish certain tasks efficiently, triggering four banks worth of notes (16x4 = 64 keys) on a midi module or sampler is one of those tasks.

^No, I didn't get that far yet, I wanted to make sure I could trigger random notes first before setting everything up, but I'll go ahead and do that now and save the parameters to disk. Could you please direct me to a previous post that explains how to do this?

If you have an MPC60, go through the MPC60 Bible thread, a lot of these basic questions are answered. Lots of useful tips in there too. Read the post by elmacaco at top of p.2 for how to set the MPC60 pads into chromatic order for use with the ASR-10 or any other synth/sampler.

Ok, so I finally got the MPC to trigger ASR sounds. It didn't have anything to do with midi notes, though putting the notes in order is something I needed to do anyway.

On the MPC I selected DRUM instead of MIDI and it worked. I don't know why this worked, I thought for sure MIDI was supposed to be selected. I'm both relieved and perplexed.

I have a follow-up question though.

How do I make samples from the ASR sustain and play all the way through after I take my finger off of the MPC pad?

Can controls asr 10 only when DRUM selected. Not working when selecting MIDI.
And EPS not responding when in Play ROOT KEY menu and in PItch Range to set sounds to pads. HELP pLEASE!!!

If you set the track to DRUM the MPC pad will play the corresponding note of the midi device. If you set it to MIDI you need a midi controller hooked up to the MPC midi in to trigger the notes.

This can be a slag if you're using samples on both machines since you'll eat up pad space pretty quick (1 active program in sequence)

When I've used an MPC and ASR with samples on both I hook up midi in and out and use the keys on the ASR to trigger ASR samples and MPC pads for...you guessed it. You need your machine's close together for this. Oh, and you need you ASR to have keys too.

ASR is such a sick sampler. I really should use it... and my MPC...

...to expand on my previous post, once you've recorded a sequence on a track set to DRUM you can then set the track to MIDI for play back. This will stop MPC samples being played on that track.

PS. I'm talking all MPC3000 here but if these 60's have the 3.1whatever os then I'm lead to believe it's all the same
