Rather Elementary

I currently have my Renaissance software running on my MacBook. Is it possible and would it be faster to transfer it to an external hard drive? I never have done anything like this but am considering offloading some of my applications to an external drive.

I wouldn't bother. The MPC app itself takes up a whole 29MB on your hard drive. You wouldn't accomplished anything by moving it to an external. You can, however, run your MPC projects of the external! But the actual app, it's not worth it!

On any software you want the app itself on the OS drive. Even if an app will run off a secondary drive, chances are it wont run as well as it expects to run off the OS drive.

Samples that are loaded or libraries for DAW apps or VST/AU is a different story. You would want that data on a second drive to maximize performance. If it's possible using a third drive and having your DAW/App record/render to that drive will give you the maximum possible performance.

Relegating the recording/save session with samples aspect to a third drive will give the maximum possible track counts of any possible scenario. Not necessary but works great if you have money/space for 2 drives beyond your OS internal one. (On a Mac Pro or large Windows tower these can all be internal and performance is even better using two or three drives.)
