Sampling directly from iPad/iPhone

Hey guys. I know this has been asked several times before so bear with me. I just recently got my MPC 1000 the other day and I have been dying to sample from my PT-01. But I don't have the cables I need. I do however have a headphone to dual 1/4 cord. My question is would sampling directly from the iPhone/iPad degrade the sound any? I would be sampling the sounds from iPad/iPhone games and wanted to know if anyone else has had experience doing this. Any help appreciated.

It will work but you have to watch the volume of the iOS device as that what will set the level of the signal that goes out the 1/8" phone jack. Try for a balance between a signal that's not to low but at the same time not so high that it will record with any distortion to the MPC. Then hopefully you don't need to add much if any gain to the signal on the MPC's recording side of it.

So it will work, but for a bit higher quality recordings maybe look into a cable that has a dock connector to RCA or 1/4" stereo outs. (On an RCA one you'd need to add 2 RCA to 1/4" adapters).

For that PT-01 you'll need these bad boys:



Its called a 1/4" to RCA adaptor.

And no the sound won't degrade. Best thing for full quality is to connect the iPad to a preamp and sample the stuff from that.

Yeah I've done both and the headphone jack is cool. But the dock connector to audio ones will have 1 less A/D conversion stage (the one where the mW's of power amps the headphone jack). Also with a dock connector to stereo cable you can still use the headphone jack if needed for monitoring.

But yeah either way you'll get a useable recording. Just if it's a dollar or two difference go for a 30 pin dock version of the cable.

I don't know I haven't got a lightning enabled device yet. Got screwed on that whole 5 month lifespan/half as powerful as an iPad 4, iPad 3.

The 30 pin I have is just a cheap Chinese one from a Radio Shack. Surprisingly you don't see as many ones with the dock connector. There's the $29USD lightning to 30 pin adapter, but at that point I'm not sure the gain in quality is even worth it if you need to spend $30 to use your $10-$15 cable. I'm sure even just a cheap Chinese one will show up if it isn't out there already, I just in a quick search didn't see one yet though.

I just bit the bullet and bought the Alesis dock after I got sick of all these adapters and cables.

Yeah, the whole 5 month upgrade thing was lame.

I'm sure on Sonic Talk they were saying the Lightening connector has done away with all the audio elements, but I could be wrong on that.

Certainly Nick and Gaz are on top of everything, and Apple would surely take two steps back any chance they get...I'll check out the video myself, Nick Batt does some of the best of reviews on the whole web.

I watch/listen to Sonic Talk religiously every week. Good bunch of blokes.

I'm not up to speed on Sonic Touch though, mainly because I haven't made the jump and got an iPad yet. I'm hoping I can get one when the next iteration drops, although everyone I know is either 40, 50 or 60 this year, so my coffers are gonna be bled dry buying birthday presents throughout the year.

Yeah until you have a device it would be torture to watch Sonic Touch. They only showcase the best, and as per usual really show the cool bits. Hell they seem downright giddy over some of the recent apps and rightfully so.

Well some of those apps you recommended for the iPhone are hitting the spot so far.

Wow. thanks for that Metatron72. I had no idea something like this existed. I considered a preamp because I thought just maybe the sound would somehow be degraded going directly into the mpc. @Ill-Green I planned on going to RadioShack today to cop those. I tried it just last night and it didn't sound too bad. I'll definitely be sampling my drums from vinyl tho. Thanks guys for everything.
