Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By Ashley426 Wed Mar 27, 2013 10:50 am
Hey,

Just got myself an 2000xl a week ago and been getting on fine with it but I want to eq and filter samples as they go into the mpc.

Currently Im running it through my Mackie dj mixer but it only has 3 eqs and no frequency.

Could anyone recommend the sort of mixer I should be looking at getting?

Thanks

Ashley

+1 that one has the most effects for your buck...

or the sp303/sp404

or any EQ, or filter...

basically, don't restrict yourself to looking for ones that are built into a mixer cause they wont be that much better than what you have now.

Yeah, a hardware filter is a good addition to an MPC.

If your 2000XL has a compact flash reader, then I would recommend an OG SP-404. You sample into the 404 with effects on and whatnot and then hot swap the card from the 404 to the 2000. So now, the samples from the 404 are on the 2000XL with effects already laced and ready to be sequenced. :smoker:

You can actually do that? Didn't know this, smooth shit!

I think the SP404 is a good idea.

Allen&Heath Xone 22 mixer has a nice filter on it as well.

Any gear that has compact flash readers can do this. Just have to be mindful of the device's capacity of how much MB or GB it can accept. I like to use 512MB cards or 1GB to keep things smooth.

Swap samples? Yes
Save samples + FX rendered together? No

well wouldn't the samples be resampled with the effects on them? that means you get the .wav with the added effect... no? or does the 404 do that different from the 303?

and also... you wouldn't need to remove any memory cards if you sampled the 404 output into the mpc.

Exactly my point.

The 404 is just sampling the source with the filter effects or reverb into the sample. There's no loss unless you sampled it that way. I hot swap with my MPC500 and SP-606 all the time and the conversion is really D/D. Not D/A.

Thanks for all the input, found it really helpful.

Think I'm going to go for the kaoss pad mini, looks like its got plenty of effects and most importantly its easy on the wallet which I need after the amount I've spent on equipment lately

Kaoss pads are very dope. If you have an iPhone the Moog Filatron app is a nice filter at only $8.

I know it was a hardware thread but you said money's tight and it is a nice filter actually, with some other cool bits like an LFO and and a basic VCO you can add to the signal. Nice X/Y control as well. Maybe just skip McDonald's on the way back from getting the Kaoss pad if you do have an iOS device. :-D
