wooo!!! reaper sends it just fine. so far so good, thanks so much tapedeck, i think this will work.
tempo displays totally wrong in ableton, but the playback stays in sync! plus this will only "kick in" once the tempo stabilizes, and the monome will never be running when the tempo is shifting slowly in REAPER for song transitions.

this is all for my live work btw, and ableton is just doing 1 job and 1 job only - sending midi notes back into REAPER to trigger evenly sliced samples. i am opting to use REAPER to drive my live show instead of ableton

the best thing is that the monome can be triggered programmatically from within reaper, so it doesn't matter if ableton's playback drifts after a long while - reaper will automatically kick the sequence back into proper time.

it'd still be a lot cooler to not use ableton at all for my live show, just to continue to be a contrarian

glad its working but i still dont get wtf ableton is doing that reaper cant :-D

is it somehow automatically generating the sequences? why can't you send the same sequence within reaper itself?

ever heard of seq24? http://www.filter24.org/seq24/about.html

i mean im glad you got it working but im all for being a contrarian and inflicting pain on yerself in a quest for liberation.

at the same time - it really seems to operate like an mpc, with computer enhancement.
for midi only, of course.

seq24 looks awesome! tapedeck that's 2 secrets you've given in this thread

glad its working but i still dont get wtf ableton is doing that reaper cant

here's what i'm doing. i have 1 track in ableton with 33 scenes, each holding 1 clip of an ascending midi sequence:

clip 1: midi note 0
clip 2: midi note 1
clip 3: midi note 2
...
clip 32: midi note 31
clip 33: empty midi clip

each clip has a follow action to move to the next scene, except the last, which doubles back to the beginning. the midi out is routed to the launchpad lights and a 32x slicing sampler (phatmatik). this is the monome (mlr) style beatslicing trick. no matter what slice of the sample you start from, it continues from that point til it loops back around. in reaper, i created a muted "correction" track that spits out a perfectly timed sequence -- routed to ableton and unmuted if my performance drifts off time and i need to correct myself. gonna add a note repeat function too, for stutters.

i got very close to mimicking ableton's follow action behavior in reaper, using piz midi looper and later energyxt, but both had other problems in their implementation. i went as far as to piece together an input quantizer (ala ableton) for reaper - still no luck. hence my frustrations getting ableton lite to be...ableton lite and not ableton 8.

so what is needed, and what reaper doesn't have, is like a quanitsed, incremental midi note sequencer, that, when interrupted with a new 'offset', plays the rest of the sequence starting from that offset.

a midi note loop that can be restarted from any point...yea?

let me think on that a bit - definitely sounds like a good idea for a chuck script. it could run in the background listening on say a particular midi channel and output the sequence accordingly.

the note 'interrupt' to give it a new offset needs to be quantised as well, yea?

exactly - and is synced to an incoming midi clock signal OR can have its tempo specified (rounded bpm value) by cc (this way instead of following a changing tempo from midi clock, you could just enter cc data at relevant times.

actually, maybe not that first note, but probably the note that comes afterwards in the sequence, you understand? so if you triggered midi note 4, note 4 would trigger exactly when you hit it, but note 5 would snap to the next quantised position.

just thinking.

ableton's management for their disingenuous "live lite" bait and switch, then, plus whatever dummy decided to disable plugins and midi output in REWIRE mode
