Cant record from mic inputs, constant noise!

I was very satisfied with the overall Ren experience (just a couple of crash in 3 months) until tonight...

Just make a beat and wanted to record some vocal shots directly from the mic Inputs, and i cant record anything!

Tried everything, really i just got a huge noise from the inputs into the recording session.

Maybe i did something wrong:

1 set the back-switches to mic and phantom 48V

2 set the switch next to gain to mic in

3 in the software set the Ren as Input and Output

3 in the software set 1&2 as inputs

Now i just got this massive noise, very loud as much as i raise the rec gain knob without recording anything.

Even without a microphone connected, if i go under the sample rec tab, i can see this static noise going constantly into the inputs! and of course i can hear it as well

Ive been recording whit my fireface 400 and the same mic and cable without issues.

I tried using just the Ren in standalone or with the fireface 400 and the problem persist.

No matter what i do, the noise persist and i can see it graphically under the sampling tab, i can hear it as much as i raise the rec knob even my the Ren hw in stand by!


Man im just getting nuts, any kind of help is gonna be really appreciated.

My platform is mac os 10.6.8 snow leopard, macbook pro 6.2 8gb of ram ssd 128gb

ok just tried within the virus ti 2 and it works great!

No noise, no hum, crystal clear recording!

Just set the back-switches to line and phantom power off.

Also the midi was send by the Ren to the Virus.

The mic is a neumann tlm 103, is there some sort of compatibility with some condenser mic?

With my fireface 400, everything works, same mic and same cable...


I have to try with a dynmic mic and a turntable as well

Hmm... i haven't tried tried to record with the MPC yet.

But to me it looks like the phantom power is the problem... Strange...

Ok I can register with the Neumann now!

Just switch the cable with another one!

The previous one was Xlr to jack 1/4, it works with the fireface but not with the ren...

Now usin a Xlr to Xlr cable I can record the mic via the ren preamp (phantom on)


Anyway for having a decent gain you have to boot the input rec gain a lot and the recording has a little bit of noise.

I guess cause the preamp are not so good anyway...there is a huge difference with the fire face 400

Sounds about right. If you compare the Ren interface to it's counterpart that Akai sells separately it's about a $900 difference.

Multiface over here, god bless RME. It's my favorite thing in my setup. But great that you have all that versatility having the 2 interfaces to work with.

ok i can assume that my unit is not faulty at all

jut testing the preamp with different mics (u47, bluebarry, etc...) and i always get a little bit of background noise when pushing around 12 the rec gain knob.

It is most noticeable when theres silence.

I guess is the typical problem that have cheap/average preamp...they are little bit noisy.

IMHO i would not recommend doing serious mic condenser recordings within the unit, about the line/mic without phantom they are pretty decent, you can use them not just for demos.

Yeah thats true

I Love my fireface, just bought it 7 years ago, best investment of all time.

Not even a single hw or software issue in many years of daily hard working!
