Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

Hello all,

Im about the receive my studiomixer tomorrow and the 8outs. I have just a little question about it. If I mix a beat in the box with the studiomixer and save the beat. And when I close and re-open the beat is it still mixed when the studiomixer is turned off ? Or do I have to do the same mix-settings on the mixer ?

Thanks.

You need to define "studio-mixer" because one can assume you are speaking about an analog or digital mixer.

If you are speaking about the internal volume settings of the MPC mixer with the 8 outs then yes, the MPC will save your internal mixer settings (pan, vol, etc.) but if you are tracking your beats out via 8 outs then you would have to make sure the external mixer is adjusted to the settings you desire. Thus for an analog mixer you have to make sure the EQ knobs are at their respective settings, and if its a digtial mixer which has saved pre-sets then you recall those pre-sets that you used, a course, this is assuming you saved those pre-sets earlier.

Thanks bro !! Its an analog mixer.

And can someone explain me how to hook it up. Do I have to connect only the 8outs to my line-ins of the mixer, and do i have to use the mainouts of the mixer too (for a reason that I dont know at the moment)?

For tracking out, Ill use the outs of the MPC. I have no 8-ins. But is there a better way when having a analogmixer ?

Thanks again,

It you are not concerned with mixing each channel then you can simply run the main outs from the MPC to the the mixer, and from your mixer connect to your monitors or desired sound source.

For tracking the actual beat (kick, snares etc) it depends on what you are tracking into? ADAT, DAW, etc... If you don't have something that supports 8 in's then you can track 2 channels at a time.

Thanks again, at the moment:

- MPC 8outs goes to my analogmixer line-ins, like mpc channel 1 to channel 1 mixer, mpc channel 2 to channel 2 mixer.

- The mainouts of my MPC goes to my soundcard/daw for trackout. I dont have 8 inserts.

- Monitors are plugged on my soundcard.

- So I dont use the mainouts of my analogmixer, do I have to use the mixers mainouts for tracking it out ? Or the mainouts of the MPC ?

If your monitors are plugged into your soundcard then you run a cable from your mixer's mainouts to you soundcard.

How many inputs do you have on your soundcard, and what soundcard are you using?

yea the way you have it now, you are not even using the mixer.

if you use the 8-outs you don't need to use the stereo out, just plug the mixer outs into your soundcard.

Yeah thanks, but what if I dont assign every pad to a channel. Come it still out of the mixers-mainoutput?

yes - if you haven't turned them down in the regular mpc mixer, they will still come out the main outs.
along with all your other sounds.
so you really need to choose - main outs or 8 outs. if you choose 8 outs, then you route all your pads.

Thanks bro. Appriciated !! I will try it soon, cause Im out of town for college. But there was one big ? for me, cause If I use my 8outs to my analogmixer, and when I assign a pad to a defaul channel, like --, how does the mpc know that it goes to my analogmixer. But like you said, if you dont turn them down, it will come out of the mixers-mainoutput. I couldnt get the picture, but now its ok.

The main outs and the individual outs are not exclusive, meaning that you could send a pad out of both at the same time. There are two mixing screens one for the main outputs and one for assigning and managing the 8 outs. If are using the main outs and the 8 outs you want to make sure that if you assign a pad to an individual output you turn down that pad to 0 volume in the main mixing screen so you don't send it out both the main outputs and individual output 1.

A normal workflow could go something like this. You first off only use the main outs, start working on your track and sampling stuff. Once you start building the track you unplug the main outputs and start using the individual outputs so you can start mixing while your working. Also don't forget you can send the metronome out of any of the indivudal outputs.

I personally would prefer a 12 channel mixer so you can sample without switching wires and make use of the "10 individual outputs" trick.

Great !!

So if I want to track out the assigned and unassigned pads I have to connect both of the outputs (analogmixer-output and mpc-stereoout) to my Yamaha Audiogram 3 (soundcard)?

Yes, however most people don't even use all 8 outputs. Usually its like kick 1 snare 2 hhats 3 then your chops/melody on 4. So unless you find yourself using all 8 outputs all the time you might want to just plug the main outputs and 6 individual outputs into the analog mixer.

You sort of have to choose if you want to use your analog mixer or not. If you use your MPC stereo outs your beat will not be mixed it will just sound how it does from the headphone outs (in the box mixing). If you use your mixer your sounds will go through all the channels of the mixer which you can set the volume of using the faders, you will have to monitor the mixer main outs. It's a one or the other type of deal.
