**Media must be in the device during boot up. Media is not hot swappable

You can tell by looking at it, that it is not hot swap, as there are not active components on the PCB, it is simply an IDE-CF adapter, no ATAPI circuitry to provide the hot swap function.

Lol yo. I will find damn near anything. Plus I have a spot nearby that usually has some hard to find items for the low low lol. When I had my classic, he sold me a SyQuest EZ135 SCSI drive with like 10 cartridges, cable and terminator for 25 bucks... I see the internal drives floating around for 80. I will find a way lol

Also... I did check the site, but I've seen mixed results with this same one. One guy could hot swap, but a young lady I know couldn't swap in her XL at all...it froze up completely.

Doesn't matter too much since I will be using a n 8 or 16 gig card

did any of them have a zip drive?

thats what im getting at... most newies dont know or dont wanna risk opening up the machine to do maint. nor spend the extra to get a more reliable card reader.

so if I was giving advice to a newbie it would be get something that doesnt have possible problems in the mix... zips are mad iffy.

spend a little more and get a solid brand drive you can trust before messing with a zip they can kill a mental progress for beat heads.

just saying their are great deals for the low... but when zips are involved im like large pro and looking at the front door

My 2KXL came with a zip drive and 21 disks. I kinda like the zip disks tho. I love old tech...BUT...I refuse to have to search through 300 zip disks to find the kick I want or snappy snare I tweeked like 8 months ago lol..Where the hell am I going to put all of them anyway. So thats why i decided to upgrade.

But I have always been a tinkerer since I was like 11...took my first pc apart when I was like 12. built my first pc when I was around 17. I always recommend newbs take apart an old working pc and put it back together and have it run properly before messing around in an mpc.

fvck a ZIP drive... don't even bother with that sh!t.

when it comes to the 2KXL it's either compact flash, external HD, or go fvck your mother...

UK doesn't use euros, we use sterling, £. OP says he's from Holland.

290 EUR is around £250 ($380 USD), which is definitely an okay deal in Europe based on the current 'street price' in the second hand market. Considering it has no 8 outs or fx, it's never going to fetch the £300-£400 region which is what many are trying to get for their XLs on Ebay UK ATM. If it's been looked after, I'd definitely consider buying it at that price if I were in the market for a new XL.

the os that works with the hot-swap capable drives only work with 1gb i believe.

i could be wrong, but that's my recollection.

I feel like some people may over think this situation... For example... When I got my 2KXL, even though it came with ZIPs and crap, I got it with the intent to upgrade. I was looking to spend no more than 300... That's what I paid...did I get a deal? Yes. I can make back what I spent on the card reader by selling the two zip drives and 21 disks I have. Weather it be an MPC owner or someone who like/wants/needs old tech, like myself. People buy floppies to sync them and recreate the James bond theme ... so somebody will surely find a use for zips on eBay.




Bottom Line...

Great deal. Seeing as how people are really selling 2K's for 500 bucks, let alone 2KXL.
Get an internal card reader. There are tutorials everywhere on how to install it.
Sell all the extras that came with it. Use the money for whatever.
Make beats. Share your work.
Live happily ever after.

I don't think that is totally correct, from my testing, it seems to me that...

MPC2000XL OS 1.20, which might be required for some ATAPI(/IDE?) card readers to operate, will only format media on the ATAPI/IDE interface as a single 'PC' partition, to a maximum size of 1GB.

It still reads/writes to 'MPC' formatted media with multiple 'MPC' partitions, and total sizes over 1GB, on both the ATAPI/IDE and SCSI interfaces, it just can't format that way on the ATAPI/IDE interface.

It still formats media with the multiple 'MPC' partitions, to a maximum size larger than 1GB, on the SCSI interface. I don't think that the single 'PC' partition is a formatting option on the SCSI interface.
