Ironically, if you strip all the extraneous modulations and effects away from Massive you end up with a rather bland sounding synth.

I was tinkering around with it one day and created the fattest sounding bass I could, then for the crack I thought I'd try and better it with my Roland SH-01 (admittedly VA), and within 2 minutes I had something with a more solid bottom end. It's not the most scientific of tests, but even a low end VA can sound more lively than one of the kings of the VST world.

I would still pit any raw analogue oscillator and filter against a modelled equivalent though. Including these 'toys'. :smoker:

yeah it is true..

I did this track a long time ago just dicking around with the 60 sequencing the korg ea-1 and added some random drums (i should probably have done something more legit with it.. but I didn't O.o)

also.. I knew that link above was gonna be that nu-mark toy set.. damn fantastic IMO.. speaking of toys, lately I have been messing with this casio tonebank (basically a toy keyboard) and honestly.. the built in speaker sounds terrible, but the "output" (doesn't say headphones.... just output) and I ran that into the sp-303 for some actual effects.. mild delay to be honest. And it actually sounds pretty fantastic for some of the patches. If you pick some of the instruments and try the lower octaves then it can sound pretty impressive considering the 3 bucks I payed for it.. I might actually use it in a song...

Nice tune. The groove at the end was dirty.

I think musicians are empowered by cheap music making boxes. All those classic machines from the 80s are out of reach for the average producer. As an example, a scratched up 303 went for £1320 on eBay yesterday, and the same guy got £1761 for his 808. That's crazy money for such rudimentary tools.

Korg are hitting the mark with their cheap analogue revival. We've been told for years that analogue is too expensive to make, and that modelling gets you most the way there. OK. The MS-20 Mini is apparently imperceptible from the 'real' thing, which is cool. I don't know if it's an urban myth, but supposedly they employed a young British Oxford electronics graduate, and he has single handedly pushed them in this new direction. Nice. :smoker:

hmm.. I somehow thought the mini ms-20 was VA.. but the korg site's specs on it claim it's an analog synth with the same circuitry as the original (or maybe they are doing the thing akai did with the ren/3000 circuitry hahaha)

they also say it's a new design for the keys etc... but I wonder if the frame is at all the same as the mini-ms20 midi/usbmidi controller that went along with the legacy collection about 10 years ago... they look quite similar comparing pics of the two. (this new mini ms-20 claims 86% of the original ms-20 size.. the controller seems to be said that it's 3/4 of the original size) huh.. who knows..

Nah, it's the real deal, albeit surface mount components rather than through hole. They drafted in the original designers to recreate it.

I've heard a few people claim the build quality is cheap compared to the original, but I don't know if that's the case.

I'll update my MS-20 thread when I get chance. There's a bunch of new videos on it.

I'm cool with the threadjack as long as there's no talk of the Ren (aka last years chip paper). :smoker:

thx for the video, looks pretty cool. cant imagine how easy it would be to generate some bass tones and make a killer bass line with it. lovin the simplicity

wow. Korg's playing their cards right. I'm becoming more and more of a korg fan every couple of months. Yet I still dont own any Korg gear but Korg fills my want list. this is so cool for those of us that want classic analog and cant afford or wont dare afford those stupid ebay prices. I'm totally with these joint right here.

Same here.

Hardware for software prices. :smoker:
