I have my REN and and M-Audio Fast Track Ultra connected. Whenever my Fast Track is on...my sample rate will only work properly at 44.1KHz. If I set the sample rate on both, Fast Track and REN to 48KHz the sound is distorted and unusable plus uncontrollable latency. I am stuck and hella confused. Anyone have any insight?

It sounds like they are having troubles locking together at anything above the standard 44.1

It also uses more CPU at higher sample rates so this could be the problem...

Do they both work separately at 48?

Does it matter if I do everything at 44.i and then export at 48? Or is it pointless to export at 48KHz at that point?

Ok...my next question then.

When I think of Linear vs. Non-Linear I think of video only. Is this true? Do I need to be concerned about my syncing issue or is it pretty pointless to worry about 44.1 vs. 48+KHz. It just bothers the hell out of me that all my devices are 96Khz capable but non of them are usable pass 44.1KHz.

Linear is a very broad mathematical term for predictability of numbers. Non linear vs linear in video is usually a reference to the method of editing, non linear meaning you can jump around and edit any part of the video at anytime while linear would be litterally editing the video in the order it will be played back (like the old VHS video editing bays). But when I say linear/non linear sample rates I'm just talking about the division of the sample rate itself... Linear is 96khz,48khz,24khz etc.. Non linear would be anything, like the sp1200's 26khz or cd quality 44.1khz. I'm not a huge modern digital guy, so I know that some DJ equipment and digital inputs on some audio interfaces require a linear sample rate but I'm not sure how needed it is. I've never personally ran into a wall in my production from not being linear but like I said I don't **** with straight digital that often...

In so many words linear means it follows a predicable path, non linear means it dosnt have to follow anything.

Linear and non-linear are nothing to do with sample rates.

Linear does not mean 96/48/24/whatever KHz, and non-linear does not mean 44.1/26/whatever KHz, what a load of cr ap.

No DJ equipment, or digital inputs on some audio interfaces, requires a 'linear sample rate', because there is no such thing as a 'linear sample rate' and a 'non-linear sample rate'.

Linear and non-linear refer to methods of editing video/audio/etc., tape vs computer, not to sample rates.

linear/non linear are terms used for a hell of alot more than video editing.....

I freely admit that all PCM sample rates are technically linear under the definition of the compression... But divisible with one another... Not at all.. So yes there are digital components that's wont accept different rates (because there is no conversion to the correct rate).

Linear "sample rate" = Linear PCM.

Refers to bit depth?

I've seen some references to bit depth in a few articles/misc Internet docs/discussions where 12 bit sampling is always referred to as non-linear, where 16/20/24 bit is linear..

More info on this would be interesting. Although it seems it has something to do with lower bit depths being compressed in some way also.. Do not quote me though..

Was hard to find any actual info on this however.
