akai s5000 no sound

I looked through the manual, checked out the web, looked through a couple forums and nothing... still can't make this machine produce sounds from its 1/2 main outs...

when i sample into it all i hear is sound from the headphone jack, and when I play back the sample it only goes through the headphone jack. I feel like im going insane trying to get this thing to play from its main outs...

what setting, button haven't I tried yet?

other than headphones.. does it go through any of the other outs? like the individual outs? (and can that be achieved through routing to various ones?)
