hi guys

just looking for a mpc4000, so still not an owner and i've got a question

if u load a multi akai cd, example with synth collection or similar, btw is it possible to load entirely cd and scroll as preset in a synth? i mean with just a rotation of jog wheel?

If your memory was maxed you'd have around 500MB to work with, not sure of the exact number but a small amount of RAM is used for sequence data. (It's 512MB total max installable on one 512MB RAM stick or 2x 256MB).

So as long as you don't try load a whole full 700MB CD you could have quite a few multi sampled patches loaded. Loading that much will take a while though. I just went to the restroom, smoked a cigarette, got a glass of water, walked up two flights of stairs...and my load was at 80%

But once loaded in memory, yes you can have play engaged with a sequence going and use the jog wheel to switch the patches on the fly as you would on a synth.

4k's are cheaper than ever right now, I recommend the machine highly as will any other owner on this forum (save for one on here but he's a pretty odd guy).

The load I described was from the HD. I imagine off the CD would have taken much longer actually, I seldom use CD's with my 4K.

I don't have a 32 bit Windows box close to it to use AkSys to load samples. (USB desktop editor and file copying app for the 4k if you aren't familiar with it) So I may be making some CD's, upload 500MB at once and do a "Save All In Memory" to the HD to get more sounds in it.

The machine is from 2002 so you're dealing with a much slower memory bus architecture than a modern computer, and the stock HD's are slower 5400RPM drives. Some here have done SSD HD mods, but it takes some sourcing the right parts to make that work. (The guys who have have graciously posted great instructions, same on 4k fan replacement)

It's really not too bad though. You often have to have a little more patience when using hardware versus a computer app, but something like an MPC makes up for it in other ways were it may allow you to create faster than a computer setup.

But once the samples are loaded after you fix a sandwich or whatever it's all in RAM and you're switching patches as fast as any VST on the GUI or with program change messages from a MIDI controller. And if it's a lot of drums it's unreal just how many sounds you can load into 512MB of RAM. (I uploaded a folder of 175 snares last night, it was only 8MB)

If only...

I just played around like it was an Xbox. MPC's can be fun to just play for the sake of playing. I do most everything on PC's and Macs, but I do need to get going again and post some stuff.
