Thanks for your reply!

mpc1000 and 2500 don't lay the pads out chromatically by default

not even in 16Levels mode?
AFAIK the mpc500s layout also is not chromatic by default, but at least in 16levels it is.

...would it make sense to support the MPCs default note layout in the chordfinder?
Just wondering if anyone would prefer that over chromatic.

Nice concept :) Yes if you select 16 levels, 'tune' and pad A01, it will tune the sample on pad A01 chromatically from A1 to A16. If you select say, pad A04, it will tune chromatically up from A04 and down on A3 and lower.

Perhaps offer the option for the MPCs odd default layout - for example pads A1 to A4 are (midi note numbers):

37, 36, 42, 82.

Unless you are using JJOS 2 or OSXL, in which case it's chromatic by default starting on 36 at A01.

BTW, G#/Ab maj is giving me a B# rather than C on pad A1.

That's actually what that note in the chord is called. (b# and c being equivalent).

It makes sense: the G# scale contains C#, so the note below (two semitones lower) in the scale is called B#. The G# scale also contains F-double-sharp for the same reason, to not repeat letters in the scale.

It's just that it's showing only the sharp chords, not the equivalent flat-root chords. Though in cases like G#, the equivalent flat key is more commonly used. (4 flats in the A-flat major scale, as opposed to the 6 sharps and 1 double-sharp in the G# scale)

the only problem with doing it for default layout (2kxl at least) is that the chords might cover multiple pad banks.

also on the xl you can't really record 'chords' with 16-levels as it only records one note + variation.
you can however do this over multiple tracks.

do the other mpcs behave the same way, or can you have more than one note var per note? i know on 1k/2.5k you can have two - but three?

still a very cool app - useful for when you DO have your pads laid out chromatically.

Hey everyone - thanks a lot for the feedback :)

I think i'll stick with the chromatic layout for now,
as the default layout is really not that intuitive and pad layout is chromatic in 12/16Levels-mode anyway, isn't it?

missing heaps of chord shapes though, so lots more work needed

As you have only one octave (at least with the 12 pads on the 500) i just used 3- and 4-note chords.
Even that way you'll end up playing a lot of inversions, which is not necessarily a bad thing IMHO.
Did i miss any of those?

:!: The tool finally got a layout - check it out:

Again, thanks for the feedback !

Cheers

playing chords on an MPC's pads would be mainly for MIDI use [as samples are rarely ever tuned to the pad they're on]... so the pads would have to be reconfigured to chromatic in order for any of this to be useful. also, i think i liked the old layout better than the current 3D looking one... just my 2 cents.
